We have been a cat family for years but now we live on a busy main road. So Mrs W would like a dog we have had some experiences of looking after or loving a dog when we looked after our daughters 2 dogs while they were out in Brunei.
So now we thinking a dog might be a might a good thing for us and the dog.
Any recommendations.
Thamks.

Small dogs are too much pot luck with their character, behaviour and intelligence for my liking.

You may get a great one like Ethel's Willy, or you may get an 5kg slavering buglblatter beast.

Miniature Schnauzer.

Super little characters, but with a tendency to be couch potatoes if not exercised. My bestie has two (half siblings, same sire) and they are such dear little things. The girls are definitely smarter than the boys (mostly), but they're game for doing things like agility and even flyball.

Otherwise, indoor cat or get a cat run.

Really depends on the size of dog you would be looking for. Also how much fur you want to be hoovering every day.

Don't get a Welsh Collie, retired mum got one five years ago and it's an ongoing nightmare, barking at anything that makes a sound; yanking when on lead but can't be trusted off lead; breaking mother day by day both physically and mentally.

We've had a series of rescue dogs. Labs are our favourite but you need to lock the fridge. We've had a Husky/Shepherd cross which was a handful. Very, very smart and had a penchant for biting a neighbour's dog which upset the neighbour. OK with people which was a relief.

We've switched to small terriers which are easier to live with. They also live longer than the larger dogs so you don't have the heartbreak every few years.

Word of warning though. If you get a rescue, check it's background as if they haven't been well socialised early one they can be a handful e.g the Husky. Another neighbour had a rescue which killed one of our terriers just this year as she couldn't control it. So check or get training.

Collies of all types are notoriously highly strung. That's not to say there aren't calm ones out there, but the odds are not in your favour and you won't really know until it's too late...

As above, be careful with rescue dogs. A friend of mine had a golden retriever, as mild as you like. Nevertheless, he'd come from a home where domestic violence was a thing and when my friend was blowing raspberries on his toddlers tummy the dog thought he was attacking the kid and went for him.

The dog did then right thing protecting a kiddie and my friend didnt punish or berate the dog it, but there was a potential for him to have been hurt and he would have quite liked to have known beforehand.

Why not check out the rescue centres close to you - depending on where based - Battersea, Dogs Trust, Blue Cross, Wood Green, All Dogs Matter - they will have done a behavioural analysis but any dog you get from anywhere is highly likely to need time and money invested in training (my brother and sil adopted a 7 month old Rottweiler Cross a year ago and he's a lot of work - a 36kg adolescent - in need of lots of time and training, not aggressive at all but can be reactive to other dogs especially small ones. He's now been snipped and is muzzled when out)

There are also breed specific rescues if you want something particular
eg for terriers
