I raced on Sunday and there's never been a better time. The reason? It's easier than ever because the competition has dried up! To explain; it was a 10 kilometre race that previously had always been a seven miler but they reduced the distance to attract more people. Now in my 'glory days' I've ran the 7 miles faster than I ran the 10k on Sunday but while I was initially pleased to get 14th (out of over 200) and first in my age group, I became saddened by the fact that there's a real shortage in younger runners coming through. 10-20 years ago, I would have ran my tripe out and be pleased as punch to get a top 20 placing but now I can run a mile a minute slower, I'll repeat, a mile a minute slower, and still finish in the top 10%! I fully expected to have been put out to seed at my advanced age but the paucity of the competition means I can still get amongst the prizes. So to all us Vets and Super Vets, I'd say you'd be foolish to give it up or not give it another go!
And BTW, this race was over a significant part of the course on the same route the Seasons of Mists/Mellow fruitfulness went over so we passed and were passed by a significant number of riders during the event.
