How can you not need a kidney and a lung?
seriously...

it boggles the mind that people think that just because you have two of something you'd actually be fine with just one.
well no you won't be fine, technically you're running the solo item at double capacity so imagine if you will the possibility that it will give out far sooner then normal.
i'll happily donate blood, plasma and bone marrow (ouch) because it all replenishes itself over time, i can't re-grow a kidney mind so i'd quite like to hold on to that.
granted there's giving one away to a family member but the payoff is far better then money.

I really do think that situation in the link is highly unusual and actually pretty mean spirited. However, even if you are entering into something like this with a friend (or anything tbh) it is always good to have a contract written down. It just saves on the grey areas and unfortunately any horrid situations like this need to be discussed and thought about beforehand.
It might not be a case of the mother being mean-spirited, but the CSA insisting on it, and having a written agreement might not have helped.

When I had my Large Intestine removed, I offered, in a haze of drug induced... Inspiration, to donate it too medical science , but the Doctors said they didn't want it (I can't imagine why).

At least I tried!

It turned out that a mate of mine was effectively born with one kidney and that one did eventually start to pack up after about 45 years. Scans revealed a stunted second kidney which had never formed properly. His dad donated a kidney about 10 years back and both men are still doing well.

In the aftermath of that trial, the number of people wanting to enrole in clinical trials rose markedly in the UK.

The drug is still being developed by a Russian-German company that acquired TeGenero's assets when it went bust. Not sure that I'd want to volunteer for any new trials with that drug.

I have heard that some folks rent out an orifice or two. Apparently there is a donation as well as payment involved
Do they have to leave a deposit?

True of eyes, lungs, kidneys etc but IIRC not of testicles or ovaries - for good evolutionary reasons they already contain huge redundancy and there is no 'overclocking' risk if you are reduced to one.

We scan patients for bone conditions such as loosening joint replacement, arthritic problems, metastases etc:

The kidneys excrete the radiopharmaceutical, so show up on the scan - finding patients in their 70s or 80's with one kidney, and never knowing that was all they had is not that uncommon

I heard there were medical schools/hospitals UK that will amputate a toe and then stitch it back on so the students get to practice reattaching. Not sure what they pay but even if it goes wrong, you still will have 19 toes left.

I doubt that very much- it wouldn't get past any ethics board! I think that is an urban legend!
