Its almost dangerous not to draft a tractor when the opportunity presents itself and passing buses are handy along with the occasional damper van downhill. At speed I always sit on the white line or thereabouts so I have somewhere to go if they stop suddenly. As for the legality of it if you have an accident it will probably be your fault it nearly always is if you run into the back of someone, however I doubt just riding in the slipstream of a vehicle per se would be considered dangerous unless you were making a nuisance of yourself to other traffic.

I have drafted cars a few times quite good fun just make sure you cover the brakes.
I drafted a car that cut in front of me as I went over an island I think he was surprised to see me in his rear view mirror at 30mph till he had to stop when the traffic built up, I draw along side him and he looked very sheepish and didn't look me in the eyes so a gave him the international recognised sign for being a tosser.

Couple of tips there for @StuAff regarding cat eyes.

Only one real comment - 30/40 mph is not that fast for a motor vehicle [and at those speeds they can stop very fast] but for most of us that is seriously shifting on a bike. In an emergency stop can you stop faster that the vehicle in front ? If not I for one will have no sympathy for you. Be able to stop in the distance you can SEE to be clear is a boring and dull sounding quote but it applies to bikes as well as to cars. Anybody can play at being a racer but not all of us have a dedicated truck and pendine sands to play on like Guy Martin

See if you can find "Breaking Away", a film by Peter Yates released around 1979, for a marvellous bit of lorry drafting. Our Hero, despite being born in smalltown America, sees himself as an Italian racing cyclist (Ciao Mama, Ciao Papa), and practices on the local highway. He gets upto 50mph (maybe 60) and then his mate the truck driver gets pulled by the cops.

Sorry Stu, that was pretty low of me.

And I wasn't draughting. I was just hanging back until the lorry got out of my way.*

*Possibly file that with 'the money was just resting in my account'.
