a brush that sits about 1 foot in front of the bike to sweep all the road debris away

Or flails at the side to discourage close passes...

At the risk of lowering the tone, here's a serious suggestion. I'd like a saddle bag which easily clips on and off the bike - something as slick as Ortlieb panniers.

Back in the 70s when I was a young chap I went touring with a friend who had his dad's saddlebag - a Carradice (dunno which, but bigger than a barley ... the words Carradice of Nelson were fixed in my brain from following him up hideous Welsh mountains). Anyway, I digress. This had a strange device that clipped easily on to the saddle. It was - if I remember right - like a very shallow "C" with two inward pointing pigeon-toed tabs that engaged with the slots on the back of a Brooks saddle. I would take forever attaching my panniers and he would just attach his saddlebag clip-clip. I think he also did up the leather strap that went round the seat post.

In modern life you can now get Carradice Bagman racks that have a quick release.

Fizik - http://www.fizik.it/accessories/bags/saddle-pak/ It clips directly into the mount built into all Fizik saddles - if only there was a standard for all manufacturers.

It also excitingly and unpredictably breaks, depositing the bag in the middle of the road behind you.

Will a bus run it over before you can retrieve it?

Who knows! Fun for all the family, &c.

Anyway, my idea is bicycle indicators. I'm sure that almost no one else has ever thought of it before.
