Last year I wrote a thread about how Sainsbury's lorry drivers in my area are virtually always considerate in their patience and overtaking technique.

I wrote a quick email to the company expressing thanks.

This morning, a large Kane truck was stuck behind me on a national speed limit road for longer than either of us would have expected or liked, but he waited patiently, didn't rev or come too close, and overtook when it was safe to do so in an excellent manner.

So I've dropped them a quick email to say thanks.

I think it's easy to criticise and complain but forget the other side of the coin. When we get the opportunity to be thankful, I think it's nice that we express that thanks. These companies will invariably track their drivers and a little goodwill can go a long way.

So, from now on I will use this thread to name and compliment those that deserve it!

After a 'you go, no I'll go, no you first' moment at Christmas with one of the local buses (NCTX), I rang them to wish them a Happy Christmas and to commend them on the large majority of their drivers road manners.

I think I made their Christmas judging my the gushing and thanks for letting them know!

People notice 99% of the bad things and 1% of the good things, so it is very positive reinforcement to reward the good.

Pass it forward(?)

I had a mahoosive, giantly enormous lorry on my tail a while ago. As I needed to change lanes towards the right to get where I was going I slowed down. So did he - he was actually shielding me so I could get across the lane. When I got the message - because the first instinct is to say ''lorry - danger, danger'' - I swung over and gave him a big smile and thumbs up. And he gave me a big wave and smile back! No email to his employer necessary for me because it was dealt with there and then - consideration received and thanks given.

My route on cycle path crosses over a junction to an industrial estate; every day there are vans and trucks from Logie Building Services and approach the junction to join the main road. Every morning I tend to meet at least one of them who slows down to allow me to traverse the junction from pavement to pavement without having to brake.

On the occasions I have to ride the road at that part their drivers always give me good space too.

These are your white van men too, which is what makes it notable.

Ninja edit: Actually decided to e-mail them to say thanks.

It certainly adds a new dimension to a commute, I find, if you're looking out for good driving instead of bad.

Perhaps it's down to what sort of day we've each had!

I sent an email to Morrisons a while back to compliment this driving:
<snip>
The Head of Transport got back to me saying that it was rare for someone to contact them about good driving. They were trying to track down the driver and pass on my thanks.
It may have been a safe pass of a cyclist, but he shouldn't have been driving in the chevroned area.

You'd be right if it had been bordered with a solid line; however, this one's broken.

Couple of things.....

There are tankers near me in Glos that always seem to pass me at narrow points on the A419 as it nears the M5 Junction. Must look up the name and company as havent actually noticed it. A419 is a major trunk road but single lane each direction at this point. Many times they simply slow and sit there until perfectly safe to pass, even if it takes several minutes to find a safe pass.

I find it a little uncomfortable/embarassing that a little train of cars will have built up behind him/her so generally up the pace as much as possible (always on way home after a ride it seems). As sson as practical, I indicate with a thumbs up or a wave and off they trundle MOST OFTEN with some sort of sign, be it a blip on the horn or hazard flash when past. I always wave a thanks as they passed and can clearly see it in their mirrors. Also the following cars for holding them up.

FUnnily enough, I get loads of waves back - the driving of the tankers definitely needs an email now I think about it!

Second point is the one about looking for good driving vs bad habits. I think the issue is much more about the cyclists attitude to these things, getting out there and enjoying ourselves, being polite and courteous, waving thanks, being aware of holding others up - be it a safety issue by taking a strong position or simply the layout of the road - and acknowledgements or waves/thumbs up where appropriate mean the bad incidents are rarely remembered....

I believe it really is much more about OUR attitude than the others, although not always

Thanks to the white van man that stopped in slow traffic to let me out of a side turn this morning.

No idea who he works for but I think he could see my appreciation anyway.

There are plenty of good people out there!
