Also a bike does not depreciate as fast as a car, I reckon I could get a fair bit of value back for my bike.

I use my carbon fibre bike for commuting and pleasure. The only things I don't use it for are off road and family rides as that would be silly.

I use my CF Cube for exactly the same reasons, I tried to use the Apollo hack bike for commuting but I just enjoy the Cube too much for just weekend rides. The only time the hack comes out now is when it's truly p**sing down in the mornings.

IMO I've definitely got my moneys worth out of my Kinesis Racelight GF (and long may it continue) in the three year I've had it (come the end of July); its done 15,688 miles (about 0.1p per mile). I'm less sure about the Bianchi 928 (5316mile in 5 years, 0.3p per mile) but I wouldn't be without it. My other bikes have been well below the OP level but I reckon I've got my money worth out of them; circa 10,000 road miles out of the sirrus (0.05p per mile)(its now on the turbo), the Ridgeback Velocity has seen 8,777 miles (0.03p per mile). My latest purchase has only seen 371 miles (its just under a month old), from a quick calculation at 0.5p per mile its looking good VfM so far but I do wonder how much it (a 13kg SS) is going to be used up north (all but 8 miles of the 371 have been done down south).
Fitted some old/ borrowed clipless pedals to the SS and took it up some of the local hills; even at 13kg I think it will be used its a lot of fun

I would say it depends on how badly the bug bites you. My bike was £700 but within months I was trawling bike porn looking for what would be my next stead. I wish that I had spent about £1000-1200 then I would have a bike that would match my ability for a long time.

In my mind a £5k bike which is enjoyed and used is vastly better value than a £300 bike which is left in a shed rotting and never used.
Personally I think its harder to justify buying something cheap and abusing it or not using it, than it ever is buying something of a higher value which is appreciated, enjoyed and used no matter how regularly.
Other than that does it really matter what people spend on a bike?

My main bike "only" cost £600, but I have spent a reasonable bit more on maintenance and small upgrades.

I can easily justify the cost in terms of how much I would have spent on either bus or petrol several times over, let alone the most important bit being that I am definitely fitter (yes I could be quite a bit fitter still!!!) than if I didn't cycle but sat on my backside letting an engine get me to work. Instead I could easily of paid £1000 in gym fees alone for the 4 years I have had this bike.

I got a tourer as a 'sunday bike' for £500 so i could have something a bit more roadworthy and have a few holidays on it. It came with all the bits like mudguards, pannier rack and would be solid and go pretty much anywhere so seemed the best all round option to me. It was still a little tough to swallow spending that kind of money but I've done the holidays and numerous day rides in the year I've had it.

I didn't really get value from my MTB until I started commuting on it, putting slicks and a bigger chainring (by accident, pretty much) helped enormously. It was a no-brainer being quicker and cheaper than the bus and justified buying the tourer.

TBH, I've taken more enjoyment and use from my skip rescue bikes than I have out of any of the ones I've bought.

TBH my most expensive bike is the MTB which gets used the least.

That said i bought it when i stopped smoking, if i start again the Mrs will cut it in 1/2 with the saw hanging next to it.

It will in fact cost me nothing in the long run.

I like quality things. I like my 1k commuter because it's a quality thing. I love my mtb that cost half as much as that again to build. I don't ride any of them as much as I'd like to, but when I do they're great! You need to quantify how you would "get your money's worth" out of anything that's a pleasure to own in the first place

My ICE QNT cost about £1500 when I bought it.
Today, as on many other days, I saw the look on a small child's face as she watched this middle aged gentleman pass by.
£1500 well spent- and all those miles and crazy downhills as a bonus.
