I don't wear a helmet because I feel that they restrict my vision and seem to make me less alert to what's happening around me (not good reasons I know) and I'm just not used to wearing a wok on my head. My older brothers used to wear the old padded leather helmets. Are they totally useless from a safety POV? Would you be less at risk from neck torsion injury wearing one of them and can you still get them? Does anyone know? Would I look like a total pillock wearing one (present status: 75% pillock)?

dont buy one of those ( bunch of bananas). utterly useless. and you will look like an absolute pillock. a decent giro or specialized which fits you and you wont even know you are wearing it.

Helmet restricts vision? How so? Is it so big that it's over your eyes? And, true, you don't HAVE to wear one. Everyone has their own opinion on this one. I have crashed, and hit my head, and flattened the side of the helmet on a concrete street. After seeing what happened to the helmet, I won't ride without one. My head is too valuable to me. To paraphrase Woody Allen, "My brain is my second favourite organ!"

In fear of this turning into yet another helmet/no helmet thread. The first thing to decide is whether you want to wear one and as other posters have stated - the jury is still out on the benefits of helmet use. There are strong arguments and opinions on this in favour and against. Make your own decision.
If you decide to choose to wear one - visit a wide range of bike shops and try a wide range.

1: How can a helmet restrict your vision? They sit on top of your head not over your bleedin' eyes.
2? how can a helmet make you less alert? Are your eyes and ears are on top of your head?
Are you wearing the helmet over your face and looking through the grills like an Ice Hockey goal Keeper per chance?
Sorry for being facitious but as as most OP's say.. if you don't want to wear a helmet, then don't. Stop making up silly excuses as to why not to wear one.
