Dumped bike

This morning i nipped to the local shop to get some sausages and noticed a rather nice scott MTB had been dumped unlocked against the bike rack . I asked in the shop and they knew nothing about it . I could see a few people passing and eyeing it up and thought that it would be gone very soon and if it was my bike i would want it back no matter what had been stripped off it .
So i went and collected it in the van . Ive just checked the frame number on bike register and there is no record of it being stolen on there or police records .
I guess the next stage would be to contact the local police station and report it ?

Probably but i'm not too bothered about that . I'd like to get it back to its owner .

I did that with a nice Womans hybrid , told the disinterested cops , and went to all the local bike shops incase they knew or may get someone in who has had one pinched , that was 2 years ago , heard nothing ,
How do I know it had had been dumped ?
2 flat tyres and covered on cobwebs etc ,

Sorry, didn't see the picture first time round!.

Facebook is by far your best bet of reuniting it with it's owner imho.

Get it shared on there and "hopefully" it goes back to the rivht person..

Maybe the owner did see it on its stripped down state and decided he couldn't be bothered.

Advise the police that you've recovered it for safe keeping, and give them the details for their found property register.

As a practical matter if no one claims it within a reasonable period of time, and you've made reasonable steps to identify the owner by notifying the police and asking around, then you can assume the rights of an owner with a clear conscience.

Technically, however, if the owner comes forward in five years time you must return it. However, this is unlikely, and by then you'll have doubtless fitted new parts so you will have a financial stake in the bike yourself and as such could be a legitimate co-owner, so they've need to sue you for its return if you chose not to do so. Very unlikely indeed.

Done that and have a CAD number . They didnt even want to take the frame number I'd be gutted if it was my bike .

Stick it in the back of the garage, if you've not heard anything in three months I think you've more than discharged your duty and can do what you will with it with a clear conscience.

But its a mountain bike with green bits , i dont have any green lycra !

I think it was abandoned as the owner could not get on with flat pedals.

I suspect it got dumped as the owner got get up riding around with no wheels.

No, from the theft act 1968...

"(1)A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it "... (my emphasis)

Taking charge of something with the intention of reuniting it with its rightful owner is not theft.
