Dumped Bikes

I got in this morning to see another bike placed awkwardly in the bike shelter, no problem a new commuter . So I moved the mtb forward half a foot as it was unlocked, then i realised it had two completely flat tyres and twisted handlebars; somebody has dumped it  hopefully only temporarily. When the other bike users come back from their hols it'll be very awkward.

A bike shelter?! I should be so lucky, our security measure is a cast iron down pipe to lock to!

We got about 6 month ago, although we've always had it ! its a wire mesh cage in the garage that used to house an air conditioning unit or something it had been redundant for about 20 years before they removed it.

Went for a wee pootle down the Lea Valley y'day and stopped off for a pint. Chained up to the other side of the railings was an old ('80s?) Dawes, scraped up but looked perfectly sound, couldn't see a model name but Shimano 600 gears, so obviously not entry-level, clearly been there for an age and some. Sad. A good bike, just rotting gently into the canal...

I am constantly amazed by the number of dumped bikes I see around the railway station, or in the town centre. My local Tesco Express regularly attracts bikes; they get chained up outside and left there. They then get slowly recycled and stripped of all useful parts until someone manages to release the frame. How can you just walk away from a bike? Even a cheap bike represents a fair chunk of money these days, and most faults can be easily fixed without huge outlay, so it beats me why bikes are abandoned.

I set up a company-wide cycle network and the company's now installed loads more covered racks, more showers and we're negotiating for track pumps to be bought and kept in the buildings.

We get abandoned bikes occasionally and the company's looking into the costs of getting them fixed up and using them as 'pool bikes' available for use by employees on a temporary basis.

We've one abondoned bike that has been there for about 18 months. It gets moved around the shed on a regular basis, usually by cheeky motor bikers who park their motor bikes in the bike stands when it's raining. It really infuriates me as the cheeky b*stards will move all the push bikes further down the rack so they can put their motor bike in. I have started deliberately locking my bike to the racks now when it's raining to annoy them (it's a secure site so people very rarely lock their bikes up).

Anyway this bike is a crapper, the tyres look perished but amazingly the tyres are still pretty much fully inflated. One of the girls has decided that she's going to stick a note on it saying that she's going to use it to potter into the village at lunch times and see if anyone gets back to her, if not she's going to designate it as a "pool" bike.
