New laws in Ireland from midnight tonight. More to follow in the coming months.
How is this going to be enforced?New laws in Ireland from midnight tonight. More to follow in the coming months.

They use/operate mobile checkpoints over there. Fail to stop when signalled to do so and one of those on the checkpoint will be on you sharpish. How is this going to be enforced?
Who is going to stop the riders in order to fine them?
An officer in a car, no way, the scooter can escape easy.
An officer on foot? Again, no way.
Maybe an officer on an Ebike, if they can handle a bike well![]()

I've been stopped at a few of their mobile checkpoints, for no reason other than I was on the road at the time.
I was on a bike at the time. And like all vehicles on the same road, headed in the same direction were being stopped. You were on your bike/trike, correct?
The checkpoint operator (police, correct?) have a car, yes?
An electric scooter can swiftly disappear where a car can't follow, doesn't need to stay on the road.
If you were on a bike when they stopped you, you could have evaded too, should you so have been inclined.
Next thing will be all cyclists have to wear a helmet and HiViz, while the E-scooter riders will still do what they do now.
I thought they were illegal anyway unless ridden on private land, maybe in Ireland is different.

Canr beat a bit of victim blaming.
Mind you, anything that deters people from riding these devides cant be bad.
Hi-Vis and helmets are mandatory in Dublin for all cyclists as it is
Indeed. While on a good day I can accept these hire ebikes and scooters on the basis of their underlying positive ideology, I'm increasingly coming to hate them both for rational and irrational reasons.
Over ten years ago. When was that law enacted? It was not the case last year.

It still isn't the case, despite the bleatings of some "experts."
Indeed, we now have a president who gets criticism in the press for setting a bad example and promoting dangerous behaviours when she's seen riding her bike without a helmet.
