The Somerset Levels might suit. Gentle cycling, plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat, and lots to do in the area from a touristy point of view.

I contacted one of the cycle hire companies and they kindly sent me some of their route cards. I also believe there is a permenant audax route too which you can get and do part of.In September it won't be so busy as in high season, and the offroad tracks will probably still be nice and dry. There are route leaflets available from tourist info offices.
