Another thing to think about is the legality of the final bike
I know that they are supposed to be legal - but I have seen some, where there is a throttle which can be enabled or disabled via a simple switch or click on a menu
Which is not how it is supposed to work
and some have "configurable" power cut off speeds so you can set it up for different countries
Now at the moment there are very few checks and if your bike is set up properly (or close to it ) then you should be OK
but "the good people of their country" are constantly being told that they are terribly at risk from all these terrible ebikes - so I can see some future government/counsel/Police Force having a "full scale effort" to eliminate them
and some of the checks I have seen publicised would be dodgy for my totally legal pure ebike to pass - a kit type would
a) be more likely to be stopped as it is type type that could be dodgy - even if your is not
and
b) be more likely to fall foul of a Police Officer who didn;t know all the details of what is and is not legal
to be fair - I do not know the intricate details of how it all applies when it comes to kits - is a configurable speed cutoff legal? Is the existence of a throttle that is disabled by a menu setting OK?
WHich is one reason why I would ne nervous of spending a lot on a kit
