I check my track pump on a Sheffield made PCL pencil gauge and and its still just fine. Unlike my newer electronic pressure gauge.

As a matter of interest, what's the margin of error on both from a known calibrated gauge?
Obviously every pump likely to differ slightly and differnt makes/models even more so but be interesting to know.

I cannot recall, but I do know the pencil gauge is way better. The info you want may be on the PCL web site.
I had mine checked at Guildford university as I knew a chap with access to the good stuff.
A chap I knew who raced cars had gone the same route and found his Dads old Dunlop pencil gauge was better than his new electronic one. :laugh:

The GCN guys are big on tyre pressure as according to research they have done if the optimum pressure for you, your wheels and your tyres is 80psi and your are riding with them at 85 psi you are wasting x amount of watts. This may be completely irrelevant to you.

In my regular commuting days I found tyre pressures very important to efficiency (based on my impression rather than measurement) so I'm inclined to believe the claim

Now that said, for home use what is important is a gauge that is consistent. It doesn't really matter if the gauge is wrong providing it gives the same reading for a given pressure.

That is worth knowing. I should cross check the electronic gauge I've been using against the old pencil gauge. The lecci gauge reads quite a bit lower the one on my track pump. the numbers matter for car tyres as I'm setting them to the book of words recommendation.

Back in the day I never had a pressure guage. I just pumped em up until they felt hard (ooer). It never did me any harm.

Yup - when I was a kid the rules was to pump it up until your Dad couldn't push it with their thumb

sometimes adding numbers to something just makes it over complicated

Or for riding a club 10, pump it up until King Kong couldn't push it in with his thumb.
And if you were using tubs, pump it up so hard that you'd need the army bomb disposal squad standing by at the finish line.
