I have never had one, never wanted one and never considered having one. I now need one urgently followed by a second one slightly less urgently.

What do I need to know about them?

I need it so that I can have somewhere other than the bed to live in given I still can't sit up after 5 months. I need it to recline quite a long way back, and I need the feet to come up at least level with my hips.

Are the pretty much all the same? Are there 'things/issues/bugs/features' I need to look out for.

Can't you just sit in the recumbent?

(sorry)

Emma, I have one that needs a good home. It's a bit beige but is the sort that tilts forward to help you get back up again, and is heated. Sadly mum no longer needs it. Any good?
Does it lie back to almost/near flat please? (It seems of it lie flattish, then get usually come all the way up to horizontal.) That is really my only requirement otherwise, yes it could well be, thank you. That requirement comes from not being able to sit up, only life down currently.

I have been looking around and it does seem that the type you describe are going to be the best option. Dual motor seems preferable, if buying new so that legs can be raised separately from back being lowered and I have reached the conclusion that it is probably cheaper to get the type that through you out of the chair using my new found VAT relief status than to buy from a furniture store.

We have one which is built into the setee, but that gets you from laying back to upright,* My guess would be that something that tilts further forward would be a specialised market. We also have a couple of the sprung recliners, but I suspect the strength of the spring might be difficult for you to get upright again without assistance.
As @meta lon said, they are heavy. Plus the they way the feet are set at the base, doesn't make them easy to move either.
I know a place in Manchester which sells ex Harveys etc., stock at very good prices, with very prompt delivery. (Just before Christmas we bought a suite at 11.30, by 2.30 the van was outside our house. Last weekend my daughter was offered a three, two and single seater suite in leather for £500 ) .
If your hubby is prepared to travel to view on your behalf, they might be worth speaking with before travelling, to see if they have what you are looking for. If you want details, let me know.

* Edit I don't know if it lies completely flat. There is a wall behind it which would limit its range anyway.

2 main types of rise & recline chairs, I mention the "rise" option as if I read your posts correctly, you may be able to get this option zero rated for vat. (recline option only will not be eligible).

Single motor will generally not go flat but will "tilt in space" which means that the seat base tilts up slightly at the front and can stop you feeling as if you are sliding forward. Often is a more comfortable way to sit & relax.

Dual motor will give the option to go completely flat, but as the feet & back move independently, the seat base stays still meaning that you could have to readjust you position when raising the back up from flat. Some do not give as much support behind the knee because of their design.

Appreciate what you said about mobility but please if possible, do not buy without trying. Seat width, height and depth as well as back & arm height vary tremendously as does back styles & therefore comfort. Heat & massage are options also

The mechanisms on most are the same and use industry standard parts so reliability shouldn't be an issue. That also means that the newspaper sellers offering etc etc at £4k plus, have the same base chair as others selling for much less. You do get what you pay for though and in my opinion, Electric Mobility are among the best value for money. Stay away from the bargain special £395 ones.

Some retailers will bring chairs to your home to try without the "hard sell". At the risk of turning this into a sales pitch, drop me a PM and I can explain. My business is not too far away from you.

Whatever you decide, good luck & I hope it makes a difference to you.

Regards

Steve

I don't actually need the rise and recline side of life, just the ability to lie further back that 45 degree because I can't sit up and can't take any weight vertically through my spine, and that includes lying backwards at an angle.

I also have absolutely no option to travel, so like my recumbent trike purchase I am going to have to purchase blind. I have no option. I literally have not left my home on anything other than a stretcher since the end of October and unless someone is volunteering to pay for a private ambulance to take me shopping, there is no option. My husband is not the same shape as me, and put bluntly a typical male - he will come back and say 'it's a chair', 'yes, it goes backwards' and if you think I am kidding, ask someone who has met him!

From the sites I have been looking on, the rise and recline side of life using VAT relief is going to be much cheaper than going through somewhere life DFS or similar. I have been looking at options such as Malborough Riser Recliner which does go far enough back for me or Pride 670 Chair Bed Riser Recliner Chair which if anything is going to make me feel like I have joined the OAP clan at 42, that is! Ha, I lie [bad pun alert] this one really makes me think that even with the other colour.... Brooklyn Rise & Recline Armchair but it meets my requirements...

No, sorry, it only goes back to a sort of halfway point, it doesn't go flat, at the back particularly.
thanks @Cubist that is a shame. Thank you for the offer though, it was much appreciated. It would have been good to have met up again. Sadly even if I do get back on my feet as before, it looks like my days of trail riding are over. Currently though, it is not looking likely that I will ride a 2 wheeler again, so that probably deals with all issues.

@Bazzer my husband can travel and knows m/c very well. he's from there. if you could let me know the details that would be great. finance is an issue so anything will help.

@stevede i'll PM you. I have a pretty good idea of what I need/want as it is. thanks.

Jacobs Furnishers 0161 834 4604. Unit 7 Trafalgar Business Park, Broughton Lane, M8 9TZ.
If hubby visits, it's at the Cheetham Hill end of Broughton Lane not the Salford/Broughton end. And he shouldn't be put off by the layout. Forget nicey nicey room layouts. It sells chairs and setees.
Not open on Saturdays, but is open on Sundays.

All the best.

My mum has one and got it VAT-free because of needing it medically. The shop get you to sign a form saying you need it (might be worth getting a doc's letter or something) and then they sell it to you VAT-free.
