Electrical use- battery or mains

My daughter has a Storio book reader/ interactive thingy which she loves and it in turn loves power.

I bought her a mains cable to it as I was sick of buying batteries, but I also bought some recharge batteries and a charger to go with her digital camera.

Now which is a better use of power? Mains plug in, or 4 x AA batteries which I occasionally have to charge up?
