So after years of just been a cycle commuter I've bitten the bullet and entered a sportive. And I'm also planning on doing longer weekend ride in the country side.

But...

For these rides I won't have my commuting backpack, so what's the bear minimum you'd take out on a ride of emergencies? And the best way to carry it? I'm thinking a spare tube & a few patches in a saddle bag and a pump in shirt back pocket?

Do you think that'll be enough? What do you carry? And how?

Sorry, I guess this is a question often asked but a quick search didn't bring anything up.

For the all my rides I carry (in a spare bottle in a bottle cage)
Spare inner tube
pack of Park Tools instant patches
Co2 Inflator
Cc2 cartridges x 2
Tyre levers x 2
Tiny bottle of lube
Spare quick link
Multi Tool

I also carry in jersey pockets or sometimes in a saddle pack
packable showerproof jacket
Charger for Garmin and Phone
Mobile Phone
Credit card
some cash

Pump attached to bike

And that covers all rides from short to long (all day, audax, night tides etc)

Edit: A couple of babywipes in a resealable bag to clean hands and/or bike.

Hold on! Where is your rag and baby wipes? Thought you'd been known to clean your bike during the ride. ^_^

Lol, I did wonder where all that stuff was going.

By the sons of it though I thinking maybe far too minimalist on what her I was thinking of carrying... Do like ianrauk's stuff packed in a water bottle approach though, might steel that idea

Comfy armchair to one person & a plank to the next
In small pack: tube, levers, CPR-9 multitool, 6" adjustable wrench, chain tool, quick links, cable ties; In wallet: sticky patches, antiseptic wipes, plasters, money, payment card; In pocket: phone; On bike: mini floor pump, lock(s); If space permits: bigger multitool, sealant canister, first aid pouch, another tube; If bike necessitates: bigger wrench(es) and other strange tools.

The more tools, the less bodging with cable ties

I manage with:
  • 2 x inner tubes
  • a multi-tool
  • a chain tool
  • 2 x quick links
  • pump attached to frame (or in bag if on fixed gear)
  • 3 x tyre levers
  • self-adhesive patches
  • an old multi-spanner if on fixed gear
  • wallet
  • phone
  • some small change

With the exception of the bottom bracket most bikes will strip right down with just 4 and 5mm Allen keys. Multi tools always have a load of extras plus flat and cross head drivers that are not needed, weigh a bit and take up space.

I'd like to see you set the derailleur limit screws with 4mm and 5mm allen keys to deal with a snapped gear cable! (There are probably loads of other examples, but that's my most recent get-me-home bodge where a screwdriver was needed.)

Never broke a gear cable. I've had a derailleur break and also a pedal but I don't carry either of those as spares. Each to his or her own, but it's all about risk assessment.
