Glad to be of help, your comments did make me laugh Steve, especially about the cook book - that's the last thing you would want believe me. I do agree about the weight of the printouts though. I could not believe how much paperwork there was with the maps and list of campsites along my route. It would be so much easier if you have a good GPS with your routes all loaded on along with campsites. I did have a Garmin E Trex 20, but did not have the routes loaded on as could not get them to work on my computer (it's very old unfortunately), I just used it when I got myself lost (usually in urban areas where maps are not much use) where I could locate my position and get myself back on track again. This is where I found following cycle routes good as it always seemed easier to follow the cycle route signs rather than navigate your own way through small villages, though I presume it would be easy enough if you stayed on main roads. Cycle routes through cities are also great as long as you know exactly the NCR number you are following.

Geoff I've been reading this thread and it has convinced me to do the same next year. I did a 350 mile tour this summer and loved it. I am going to take the plunge and start planning immediately. This is a great thread with expert advice from friendly and helpful people.
Thanks everyone.

Geoff, did you buy Phillips Navigator Britain that Jackie suggested?

Mine arrived in Denmark yesterday. It is about the weight of your bike. I have never seen an atlas like it.

No, haven't done that yet cos I have an old one on my bookshelf and can see how big it is.
Just at the moment I'm wavering but my preference right now is to use the Cicerone guide book route except for the deviation across Dumfries and Galloway to cross to Arran, the Kintyre peninsula, Mull then up the west side of Loch Linnhe to Fort William (Jackie's suggestion). From here I could then resume the Cicerone guide. My feeling being I'd need no maps except for that deviation; Cicerone having excellent maps and route descriptions.
I've begun putting the route into Garmin Connect with legs of 35 miles (ish). My overnight in Cheshire this week told me not to do 40 odd miles back to back (I had a sore bum). Plus, I'm in no hurry; if it takes 4 weeks what the heck?
Cheers
Geoff

I was plotting the cicerone first day yesterday. I dont have the route in front of me but there was a turn in the book that it told you to take a turn but would have sent you the wrong way. I think the book and routes are accurate but do need checking with Streetview and Mapmyride ride.

I think I just might skip doing the ride because once I have plotted the whole route using this book and Streetview, I will have seen it all anyway :0)

Yes, I seem to remember that anomaly , but, once commited to a Garmin route (or similar) that won't matter.
By the way, you may have noticed other posts on this but my E-WERK is working well. It'll charge my phone, Garmin and my Powergen cache albeit slowly. And the settings are the same for all since they're all charging via USB. Plus, that lamp's great. Not that I'm out in the dark much but I like it being there in poor visibility/failing light. Really gla I had that dyno hub fitted on the Sherpa.

This is the reason I don't do any more than the minimum of planning and seldom read tour blogs.
I want a bit of an adventure, travelling with an open mind, discovering things for myself and not being reminded every day of photos and comments made by a previous tourer.

That's the way to do it. Everyday is a surprise on my tours.

At some stage I hope to do a 4,500 mile tour coast to coast in North America. My planning is limited to investigating how to get to the start of the ride and how to get back from the end. I have had the twelve maps of the route for over a year and have only looked at the first one, last one and a couple from the middle of the route.

That sounds an excellent trip Vernon. Good luck with it. But don't hesitate too much ... you're only young once ;)
