I understand what you're saying AH, but having lycra cycling shorts with good padding is probably more 'protective' than walking around with cotton shorts and silk or nylon panties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stop thinking about silk or nylon panties, Keith!

I do have padding on my shorts which is a bit silly with a recumbent (but at least it indicates to people when I'm off the bike that I'm not wearing this stuff for fashion!) but it's more fear of one's backside being a bit exposed. I can recall some photos of ladies in lycra shorts with clear evidence of some bike parking space and I don't want that

I am also wearing cheap Aldi cycle shorts so they're unlikely to be good quality and may sprout holes at any moment!

I wear baggy MTB style shorts. They have a lycra inner, but also a pair of ordinary looking shorts outside so you get the comfort but don't feel self conscious when off the bike.

snap. padded lycra under either cycle shorts, or an old pair of normal comabt style shorts. Works well for me, of course if you are serious about things, then there is drag caused but not wearing a lycra skin

some guys just dont look good in lycra. For me personaly, i dont mind seeing slim fit guys cycling in lycra, but when your stuck behind an elephant in lycra with sides splitting, flesh hanging out, or trying to escape, as he huffs and puffs on his mountain bike, it does make one feel quesy

I tend to, being a full on hetero male avoid eyeing any male in Lycra up and down, fit or not, I myself am not skinny but apparently according to the missus I look pretty good in Lycra, she showed a picture of me in it to her mates and apparently it went down quite well but then I suspect they had been drinking quite a lot of wine and were perhaps impressed int the same way as a Donner kebab looks appealing at 2am on the way home

Lycra is wonderful when on or near a Bicycle, the further you move from said Bicycle the more conspicous, ridiculous and vulnerable you feel.

I saw sod it, if I am enjoying my cycling I think sod anyone with an attitude, I think most actually feel guilty when they see cyclists as they are generally sat plobbed out in a car bored stupid.

Trouble is, wearing Lycra sometimes boosts your FCN beyond your actual ability !

VPL? FCN? WTF?

VPL, visible panty line, outline of undergarments seen through outer garments

FCN, Food Chain Number, I thought that would be well known on here seeing as that is where I heard about it from, basically, depending on your bike, its accesories and your attire you allocate, based on defined rules (google FCN) you are allocated your position in cycling's pecking order, your position in cycling's food chain, its a kind of handicap system to level the playfield for impromptu road races with other cyclists, for example a baggy clad MTBer beating a Lycra Roadie, in full team colours would be an epic victory due to the disparity in their respective FCN's, with the Roadie being very high and the MTB'er being comparatively low.

WTF, What the F*ck, an abbreviation used to express surprise on internet forums.

Hope this helps.

Lol, cheers J4CKO mate, my post was more of a facetious nature rather then asking for an explanation ;)

Glad about that, my wife made me feel a bit pervy going commando but now the Cyclechat collective has spoken, it is officially expected to not wear pants underneath Lycra.

Wasnt uncomfortable, going without does tend to make you feel like you are walking round starkers though.

i brought some leg warmers last year instead of winter tights. wearing them with thin bib shorts really did make it feel like i was cycling with no shorts on; warm legs and cold nether regions ;)

Yes, but wearing undies is so deviant. I followed a girl in Glasgow today with very pronounced VPL - not good. It just looked strange. Cycle bibs should have a clean look to them.
