Not ex services myself, but my dad, his brother, and my brother all served in the RAF. By chance, i spent many years working with predominantly ex servicemen..
Sometimes i regret not joining..most if not all behave and think subtley differently to everyone else, more upright if you like.
The downsides...moving every two years as a kid doesnt allow you to put down roots, you dont really feel like you belong anywhere.
