The bit above is in conflict with the statement from your first post:

Is there any official rules on who gets priority here? I never know what to do, and go first anyway. I don't like turning right.



Like the others say, read the Highway Code and/or get some cycle training. That way you'll get to be old enough to sit in your armchair worrying about the youth of today.

James you have priority over the traffic coming out of the side road. you should position yourself opposite the centre line of that road (just after the "d" of the words written on the road. You do not have priority over traffic coming towards you on the same road. you need to wait for a gap in that traffic before turning.

Don't sit on the centre line though while waiting to turn if the road is too narrow for cars behind to safely pass. stay in your lane about 2 thirds across to discourage traffic squeezing past behind you.
