Thanks for posting this - it looks really good. I have mentioned it to a couple of cycle-mad colleagues who are tempted - I'm nowhere near capable of a distance like this at the moment, but I am toying with the idea of having a go at the stretch from Taunton to Exmouth, if I can take a rough guess at the time they'll get there - and if I won't offend anybody by doing what they might rightly regard as 'cheating'...

I'm hoping to do it this year. Been looking forward to doing it for years but things got in the way. This year everything could work out just right, except I haven't done anywhere near enough miles this year. Been looking after my elderly parents and not getting the training in. I've done a 100 mile ride last year. Going to get a 50 miler in this Sunday and if that feels easy I'll go for it.

I haven't done an overnighter before. Not planning on carrying too much, but a rack-top bag with waterproof top, couple of light layers if I have to stop somewhere for example. Jelly babies, flapjack, 2 water bottles. Printed route instructions in case phone doesn't work. Any other advice ?

I don't think anyone will think of it as cheating. It's not a sportive - you ride what you want to ride. Tell you what, take over from me lol

Sounds like you've got all the basics covered, I've carried similar in the past (as well as tool kit etc) and layers are a good idea, it can be pretty chilly when you stop, and in the small hours before dawn.

As @User76 says, there will be tea and cake at Cheddar and hot food half way, at Fivehead to keep energy levels up.

We hope to run the usual tea stop at Luppitt, too, but at the moment we don't have enough volunteers to run it

If anyone is free to lend a hand at Fivehead or Luppitt we'd love to hear from you!

I managed last year with saddlepack and my jersey pockets. As Baggy says, layers are the key because the temperature will vary through the night plus you'll be stopping and starting. Arm and leg warmers are useful as they pack up small if not needed, plus a cap to go under your helmet if you wear one.

I use Garmin gps for navigation, which isn't essential but certainly speeds things up. You might find a small helmet/ head torch useful for glancing down at printed route instructions - I suggest you laminate them and attach them to your stem or bars. And take a waterproof puch or bag for your phone.

Thanks. I did 50 yesterday which was tiring but I wasn't dead. Train tickets and bike reservations booked and I'm going for it.

I did the 50 with a rack top bag and had some weight in there. The waterproof over trousers contribute the most I think, lock too. Ordered merino knee and arm warmers. Think I'll ditch the waterproof trousers.

I use ViewRanger app on my Android phone and have tube top bag for it. Will take printed instructions too.

I'm going for Gilet plus light windstop layer.

Merino base layer, bib shorts and knee warmers. My legs rarely get cold.

Trying to decide whether short sleeve plus arm warmers or long sleeve and roll up sleeves at the start.

In my experience, there's little point trying to keep dry on a long, wet ride.

true, once your wet, your wet. as long as I am warm and wet (careful) that's ok. what's the local forecast?
Bit far out to be sure. We might just be really lucky and hit the quiet spot between two wet and windy spells. On the other hand ...

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:
Sunny spells on Thursday, but also further isolated showers. A wet and windy spell likely on Friday. Sunshine and scattered showers again on Saturday.

UK Outlook for Sunday 10 Aug 2014 to Tuesday 19 Aug 2014:
A spell of cloudy, wet and windy weather looks fairly likely to affect the UK for a time on Sunday, with current expectations that this will clear eastwards early Monday, to leave a breezy day with scattered showers. However, further rain is then likely to spread from the west later in the day to most parts except the far north. Temperatures generally near normal, but feeling rather cool in the stronger winds and heavy rain. Towards mid-week, a north/south split looks most likely to become established, with outbreaks of rain or showers and breezy conditions towards the north, the best of any drier weather in the south. Daytime temperatures probably near normal, but perhaps warm or very warm at times in the east. These conditions then look likely to persist.

Cheers Mick, I saw that on the BBC website and was hoping some of the locals could conjure up a much nicer forecast ^_^

we shall see.
