If Cleethorpes doesn't quite do it and you are determined to go down the Indian Ocean route, Zanzibar's not bad. Give yourself a couple of nights in Stone Town and three or four on the beach. I think the flight to Dar es Salaam is about 8 hours, then it's a 20 minute hop to Zanzibar. Pemba is even better.

Tell everyone you're going to be away, stay in bed all week. You just saved £2000 each to spend on something you always wanted.

A week in just your pants - what's not to like!

Grenada - stunningly beautiful island, lovely food and wonderful people.

Pre-kids we travelled all over the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Mauritius, Seychelles, etc. Now that the little darlings have curtailed long-haul holidays for us for the moment, it's the memories of Grenada that are the fondest.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
same here but with the Hurtigruten ferry up the coast of Norway
We looked at Hurtigruten, but decided that a week on a cross-channel ferry would send us quietly mad. Instead we're flying up to Northern Finland. Friends are coincidentally doing the same thing this week.

+1 for Cleethorpes. When I lived in Hull, it was a short hop, skip and a jump across the Humber Bridge. Great market. 3 pairs of thermal socks for 99p.
and another for Cleethorpes. They've still got donkeys on the beach, Brown's cafe will give you approximately £1997 change from your two grand and there's a decent pub in the railway station.

My husband and I just cycled there in summer instead. up the norwegain coast from the lofoten islands, a day on the huritgruten ferry getting off just before midnight and then cycled to Nordkapp - also cycled northern finland as well. Where are you flying up to, if you don't mind me asking?

I can't remember! It's a reasonably big British company that does Northern Lights tours - although looking at the BBC news website, perhaps we should have gone to Antrim instead.

So did I, when I went there, but that was 1981  It may have changed since.
