My wife has just got back from collecting the car. The salesman and his supervisor attempted to go through the whole insurance add ons procedure again with her. Despite her strong assertions that she had no intention of purchasing anything other than the car the sales pitch went right through to the end and they deployed guilt inducing phrases in an attempt to make her feel stupid for declining a copper bottomed deal. The prices were then reduced even further than yesterday's reduced prices. Still no deal.

I think that the car salesman played by William H Macy in Fargo was spot on, the scene where he goes into the other office to "negotiate" a better deal on the paint protector with his boss is fantastic. I've had double glazing salesmen doing the same thing by ringing up their boss to see if they can get "special dispensation" just for me, i was convinced he was negotiating with the speaking clock.

You can do this back to them... just tell the salesperson you have only a limited budget which is much less than their best price on a particular car...unfortunately it's not your sole decision and that you have to ring and speak to your better half who 'tells' you that you can't afford it and that they are looking at a better deal in the garage they are in, so what can your garage do on the price? Always best to have a choice of 2 and work one against the other.

not really off topic, but going slightly to one side...

i was really annoyed by the salesman when i went to buy my motorbike. the place i went too "used" to be a honda dealer but now they do cheap no name jap bikes.

my choice was a 4 year old honda or a brand new no-name jap bike for £200 more !!!

the jap bike seemed too good to be true and probably a pile of junk. i wanted his honest opinion as to which was best, i was going to buy one of them anyway.

all he kept saying was.... "thats for you to decide"

he really peed me off in the end so i walked out. went back when he wasn't there and bought the honda from another guy who couldn't have been more helpful.

god i hope they work on commission

We bought a second hand car yesterday from a local dealer. He too wanted to sell us various add on bits, including a three year extended warranty (after the two years we get free with the car). These extended warranties always amuse me..... it's kinda like the manufacturer saying they haven't built a decent enough product, that can't last 5 years before things start getting worn. The car is a 2010 model with only 14k on the clock. Given that we don't do huge mileage every year (only about 8k), we politely declined the extended warranty.

Slightly OT as well. I've always bought Ford (never go wrong, cheap when bits wear out - a car is a tool to me). THe Ford Dealer in the centre of Leicester has a good range of cars, at the price on the windscreen. However if you travel 15 miles outside Leicester to Coalville and visit the Ford Dealer there, the same cars are 10% cheaper and they give you a better trade in. My current Focus I looked at in the Leicester dealer, went to the Coalville one and gave them the model I wanted. They didn't have one in stock, but their computer showed one was available at another dealer and they would ship it in for me. One week later I'm driving away from Coalville with the very car I sat in, in Leicester for nearly £1500 less.

I hope the salesmen were something like these

Went to Carcraft to look at an MX-5 for the wife recently, as much for interest as for a laugh.

Gap insurance on 6 year old car!

Mandatory HPI for £100!!

Some other rubbish they tried to add on.

I told them what I was prepared to pay for the car and they could do what they like with the extras. The cheky bastard reduced the price to my figure and out of the goodness of his heart offered me finance on the difference!

I bought a second hand car recently from car giant in west london.

The plus point is that you pay the price on the window, no hard selll and no haggling allowed so the prices are all very competitive.

But then they try to sell you all the add ons listed above, on a second hand car!

Even though I declined all the products before they tried to sell them to me, they made me watch a video on the grounds that I needed to do this for FSA credit regulation purposes. The sales man was quite rude and would not take no for an answer. He then took me to a second manage "to sort out the paperwork", which is code for try to sell you finance. I was paying cash and this bloke knew he was getting no where so gave up quicker than the 1st bloke.

I have never had a job in sales, but it seems to be a high pressure environment fueled by bullsh*t and testosterone.

If paying cash, my granddad found it helped to have a roll of notes with you, do the negotiation to the price you want for the car, get bored of saying no, dump cash on desk and simply state "if the keys are not on the desk soon I'll be going again"

he only left a dealership without the car once, they were still trying to sell PPI or something so he stuffed it back in his pocket and walked out

bought the same car from them a week later £100 less!

Cheers Vernon, inspired by you I actually shopped around for my gap insurance, which I was going to buy without thinking - now I have got it for a third of the price.

Thanks you.

Glad to be of service

The profit margins are huge as indicated by the salesman offering two price reductions on the original price.
