Why waste energy and tyres accelerating fast?

Most modern cars have enough get up and go unless you buy the poverty spec model.

Our 1.6 diesel (spawn of the devil fuel) Picasso drags around the family pretty well and swallows up shed loads of stuff....

Buy what you need to fit in what you want whatever it looks like on the outside

Like others have said, trickery and turbos etc increase power. With turbos you need to make sure oil is changed regular. You can get say anything from 120 bhp to 200 bhp out of a 1.6 petrol !!

Things have moved on massively. Diesel turbos pull like stink from low revs, but some of the newer petrol turbo engines produce a huge amount of power.

I would recommend driving some though. As peak power doesn't come in when you need it. We have two cars, an old 1.8 with VVT and a new 1.6 VVT, both from the same company and the same power. The old 1.8 pulls better and accelerates much quicker in gear, despite the same BHP. The torque is better on the old car. The new car is more fuel efficient !
In some cases, even with outwardly the same engine, same capacity, two different generations of the same car can behave completely different.
My old 1.6 SRI H Astra was very punchy at low speed.
My new 1.6 SRI J Astra is a stodgy as a bowl of custard in comparison.
Both have almost exactly the same BHP but apparently the management on the newer car is more 'invasive' to achieve better and newer emissions standards compared to the older one.
And the newer car is heavier.....

High horsepower doesnt always make for a good car , better off looking at the torque figure's or even still drive it and see how it drives

[QUOTE 4691795, member: 9609"]Mine is just my old works van, bike goes in standing up and can sleep along side of it to keep it company.

I think you may find it a bit noisy at speed after the CRV, it feels pretty unrefined at big motorway speeds and it will sound like its going to blow if you try and keep up with the germans in the fast lane - but I rarely go above 50 and at those sort of speeds on country roads its lovely to drive, big mpg and nice sitting up driving position, and a little higher than a car so you get to see a bit more. mines is a mk2, 70bhp 1.6hdi without a dpf.

I was worried about how OH will feel about the performance of a Berlingo compared to the CRV which is (and I say this as a confirmed tree hugging, car hater) a pleasure to drive. I hardly drive at all, but OH is up and down the motorway all the time as his kids live 60 miles down the road as do his elderly parents. So, we'll see how he feels after a couple of test drives. Having said that the better fuel economy appeals to him as much as anything, plus he's hoping to get an automatic as he's always preferred that since he had a Bongo a few years ago.

Love the set up you have with the van. We've wild camped around Scotland a few times now in the our car. Love the freedom of parking up an bedding down. We've woken up in some of the most beautiful places in the world. The above picture was the view from my bed somewhere on Arran last autumn.

I fitted a brake light to a berlingo last week and the chap was very excited telling me his plans for its conversion to a camper van!

Unfortunately the Citroen auto is an horrendous thing, please please please make sure he has a good drive in one before he buys, it is one of the worst auto systems I have ever had the misfortune to have to drive. They took a great idea from the German's & tried to make it as cheap as possible in their on unique French way. Whereas the Germans use a double clutch to make almost seamless changes, the French use an hydraulic or might even be pneumatic clutch which is supposed mimic a driver, it really is horrible & this is from somebody who had Citroens for over 20 years.

Thanks, I'll make sure he has a decent test drive before we decide.

You can have two similar engines with different power outputs (forget about bhp, just think delivered power) if one has been fiddled/tuned/set up to use more fuel or, if one has had some fancy work done to it such as balancing, porting, exhaust work etc etc.

Two identical engines will have extremely similar power delivery, so if the one delivers more than the other, they are not similar. Similarity is not only defined by engine size. Typically, a company will have three variants of say, it's 1.9l engine ranging from 74kw to 115 kw. It is not just about engine size but also about fuel delivery, engine management and inlet/outlet port differences.
Be aware with the advances in turbocharging similar sized engines can have wildly different outputs...so, you can get a 140bhp 1 litre in a Ford Fiesta but slightly larger engines in the same car with half that power. Totally confusing or what.?
You can never have too much bhp imo...current car 313, one before that 420, one before that 340 (all Beemers)...no wonder i never have enough money to spend on bikes :bravo:
