I like the Freecom for its portability and ability to bounce when dropped though that may not mean it is the best.
The Iomega ego drives are best for that I think.

Portables are better for surviving drops but are slower with lower maximum capacities and higher prices.
I have a 160gb Samsung S1 which is the length of a credit card and only a little wider and comes in a leatherette
wallet.
But if you're after backups then you're not looking for portability so much (don't start off on offsite backups please  ) and a NAS drive with capacity for multiple drives would be better as you could leave it next to the router but then more expensive and requiring technical knowledge.

Best I've had so far is a Western Digital Passport.

Ordered a Western Digital Passport drive today at 500Gb. Fingers crossed. I've never bothered too much in the past about backing up but all of a sudden it seems important! Possibly because I have now scanned hundreds of old photos on to my PC and thrown away the originals!

Not so! I got them all printed up into an album once I had scanned them into my PC. THEN I threw away the originals!
So you scanned them into a pc, threw them away then printed new copies ?
What is the life expectancy of photo prints as I seem to remember figures of 10 years being quoted as good a while back
and assume they still have a shorter life expectancy than the film copied variety

Stop trying to burst my bubble! I am happy that instead of having prints tucked into almost every drawer and cupboard in the house, they are all now sorted out and the ones I want to keep are all tidily in an album (well 2 actually). And backed up on my PC. I did keep the half dozen or so prints that were over 60 years old ..........
