Henry Cooper dies aged 76

Even though boxing was never my 'thing', I remember the craggy face well. A great personality. IIRC he was the first man to show the world the soles of Muhammad Ali's feet - though he never defeated him.

RIP.

One of my sporting heroes, I was watching when he put Ali on his arse and I was watching when Bugner beat him, legend. RIP.

I remember listening to the Ali fight on the radio with my Dad and Harry Carpenter commentating.

Henry was a true gent.

^^ p.s. my Dad was listening not commentating

Years ago our 'enry was in Boots in Cardiff promoting the great smell of Brut, my MIL, who was no more than 5' tall, was most put out that some bloke was causing a commotion and getting in her way so she gave Henry a shove and told him to get out of the way!

And he opened the timber mill were I used to work nearly 30 years ago.

And he was a good boxer.

He had a great sense of humour.

A few years ago, Michael "Riverdance" Flatley announced that he was "seriously considering" resuming his youthful interest in boxing, and Henry Cooper was asked about the wisdom of the career move on a chat show.

" Well, Flatley's a pretty boy, isn't he? He's not going to like having his face rearranged on a regular basis, is he?"

Top man.

My Mum and Dad were absolute fans - as were so many of that generation. It was a regular pilgrimage to his greengrocer's in Wembley to get served by him, if they were lucky! Such 'kind' memories, with no taint or distastefulness which is prevalent nowadays.

R.I.P.
