I farted in in mallorca a few weeks ago, was quite funny, especially as I was stood in the sea at the time.

unfortunately it didn't knock a fish out.

I think it may be because deep down (and this may be the English nature for being repressed) we are embarrassed about body functions and thus treat it as a joke as a release?

It may be like the uncontrollable urge to laugh during funerals - own up, we've all been there!

I remember a rhyme from when I was a kid:

A fart is a volcanic eruption
It comes from the island of Bum.
It travels down Trouser Leg Canyon
And comes out with a musical Ummm.

Can't remember how or when I learnt it but can't seem to forget it.

I don't know, but people have been seeing the funny side for a very long time:

You've just reminded me of the 'fart helmet' in Jackass - The Movie.

Watched that when I was off work ill with a cold last year; thought I was going to die laughing as I was having coughing fits whilst trying to get my breath back. For anyone with a healthy sense of twisted toilet humour, that film is the ultimate pick-me-up when you're not well.

Of course, this might all stem back to childhood when my Mum would let me listen to a Billy Connolly LP we had when I was ill. The story about the man who could fart in stereo was the one I always enjoyed most...

Billy Connolly - Get Right Intae Em if i remember correctly.

As a youngster i didn't get all the jokes but i remember playing it years later and nearly wetting myself with laughter when he was talking about the T A's , but that's off topic sorry.
