I did bite the bullet today and started work on the wheels which l haven't touched since the bike was delivered. I chickened out and put the freewheel to one side and concentrated on the other one. Did the usual, cleaned up the rim got rid of the cobwebs (not joking) which festooned the spokes and tried to turn the spindle... seized solid with ye olde grease. Sorted it out cleaned it up and re greased without loosing any bearings, success! Flushed with afore mentioned success took a look at freewheel, counted teeth on largest ring ONLY 23 . So now l will have to remove the thing otherwise l will only be able to ride up and down the road outside the workshop, l will never get up the hill out of our village:sad:

The bcd of the crankset is 118, so you could go down to a 36 on the front

It's so much easier solving someone-else's restoration problems rather than your own:laugh:

Can you tell me what effect changing the crank arm length from 170 to 175 would be ? l have struggled to find a chainring of 118 bcd but l have found a complete chainset i.e.http://www.ebay.fr/itm/282424161665?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT If l buy this l can put the Coppi chainset on the Faggin which has got badly chewed up outer chainring thereby "killing the bird with one stone"

The stronglight is a nice piece of kit and it would be a shame to toss it in the parts bin. With a 144 BCD so you can pick up rings easily and cheaply, Of course, YMMV.

Yes don't worry, l like the stronglight and l am going to use it when l get a new chainring. Its a bit like musical chairs
I'm a bit like that in that I move bits from bike to bike, I've even got an Ultegra triple (HT11) sitting in the 'spares' box. I even know which bike it's going onto, trouble is the 105GS rear mech it needs is on a different bike (which for a while had the triple on) so it's a lot of faffing about.

Yes and as l get older l find it much harder to keep track of all the balls which l am attempting to keep in the air at the same time. Not only that but an attractive new "ball" will pop up above the horizon from time to time, adding to the state of confusion. This leads to unexpected consequences such as me unthinkingly fitting Shimano 105 aero brakes and levers to the Coppi and finding the result quite pleasing. :cuppa:
