Woah, too much too soon!

What sort of hills and climbs are you mixing into the miles - I bet it is alot?

I got back into cycling a few years ago and my max distance was 1 hr, 15 miles, on a Sunday. Added to this I would do the occasional 10 miles at lunch time,
I repeated this for several months and started to cycle into work.
My average mileage per week was about 40-50 miles max.

Give it time

I suffered from very much the same sort of problems when I first started road cycling several years ago. After regularly commuting 2 or 3 miles to work for many years, I decided to go on some forty mile rides through the countryside... bad idea! I was totally wiped afterwards, good for nothing for the rest of the day.

It was simply a case of too much, too soon though. I backed off the mileage to twenty or so for a "long" ride and it made for a much more enjoyable weekend. Six months later I was doing the longer routes much more easily, quickly, and with energy to spare afterwards. There's a definite plateau in fitness later on, but you'll be amazed how much you improve when starting out, just give it time and take it a little easier for the time being.

Good luck!

Everybody has given you very sound advice. I would also try cycling at a higher cadence. This is something I have been doing lately and I feel a lot fresher during and after the ride. I used to try and grind up hills in a tough gear but now it's just a case of spinning up them and saving my energy
