Not for cars it doesn't.

According to signs in most urban areas, 20mph is quite acceptable even when children are playing, judging from the children's designs they put under the round (20) sign

That said, I get your point since anything over 10mph is usually invariably seen as "riding like a bat out of hell"

I take this point but in reality you have to take into account the conditions and if you've ever ridden down Fenchurch Street, especially of an evening, you might do as I generally do and slow down. We all know that a lot of pedestrians listen for cars for a kick-off and you don't get many cars down there doing 30 lets put it that way. I used to cycle down a road not far from Bank which people used to annoyingly treat as a pedestrianised zone and wouldn't get out of the way even if I rang my bell. Now technically, I could cycle down there at 30mph if I was capable of it but it would be crazy to do so.

Edit: btw, just realised I haven't said I'm glad _you're_ OK Tynan - after telling you off for not worrying about the ped. Hypocritical bugger that I am...

I've been told off enough on here.

Plus I haven't got the caspability to change the way every ped crosses the road in London so I tend to ride more relaxed in heavy ped zones...or early morning/late evening/rush hours.

Don't want another accident...I still feel guilty about the 1991 accident.

Also, there are drunk people on Fenchurch Street at night. There always are pretty much I would say and it's not that long a street really. Could you just not slow down a bit for a minute or so to take that into account? Maybe then you and/or other people wouldn't be picking themselves up off the tarmac so often.

Quite right, and also, you should have taken into account the local air pressure, wind speed and temperature of the road surface...just in case some sauced up pedestrian decides to step out infront of a fast moving vehicle without looking.......

Christ Gouldina, much as I approve of your concern for the other human being involved...please DONT try to make out that anyone but the pedestrian is at fault here...even if they were not drunk (as at this point this is speculation) they stepped out, without looking...like thousands of others and paid the consequneces.

Tynan, Glad you were not hurt too badly and I wish the pedestiran a swift recovery also.

Ive had a few of those balloon thingys on my elbow from playing squash(although none of mine were ever made of gold) take care ,they can get infected and lead to all sorts of issues..I was on an I.V drip because of one once.

Er, I'm not. Fault isn't the only consideration though is it? None of us wants an accident regardless of whose fault it is.

Fair enough, but when something like this happens, then two or three post on you read how the cyclist should have done "so- and -so" to prevent the incident.... it just get's my blood boiling.

We all (I hope) know how to take the best care for ALL whilst on the road, but sometimes other people do things that nobody but THEM can be held responsible for.

Rant over....sorry I shouted.

No worries, take your point and I'm sorry I gave that impression.

Jonny, I'd normally agree with you on most things, but Tynan has repeatedly shown on the this forum a lack of empathy and sympathy where pedestrians are concerned. He has also admitted he likes to race fellow cyclists on his commute and he has posted about the chaotic nature of Fenchurch St and pedestrians before. As such, I interpreted the OP similarly to Gouldina.

I hope both Tynan and the pedestrian make a full recovery.

Shame Tynan, I hope you recover quickly and well, and that the ped does too.

Speaking generally and not about this incident, I fall on gouldina's side of things. Pedestrians are predictably unpredictable, so I try to be extra careful around them and keep my speed down.

I can see your logic... but as Peds can be around on any road us cyclists can be on, does this mean we should all be going at about 10 - 15mph at any time... just in case?

Hope everyone gets well soon, and that everyone reading this thread is fine too. Love for everyone.

I cant say that I've noticed any tendacy's from Tynan, but am happy to take your word on that.

but none of this is a reason to lay any responsibility with a vehicle travelling legitimatley at legal speed on an open highway, when someone just steps out in front of it. Hwether that vehicle like or dislikes pedestrians

If Tynan barged the ped, or steered towards her, then this would be a totally different discussion.....but he didnt, she just stepped out, she didnt look and she was unlucky. I hade two people do this to me this morning and one last night and all of them caught the full Jonny megaphone "Watch...OUT" (I have a very loud shout!), which stopped them, all all in the near vicinity ...in their tracks.
