I have just been looking at ferry prices. Some of them don't have a 'bike' option - does that mean you pay as foot passenger?

It depends.;), but many ferry companies charge for the bike.
If in doubt contact the ferry company directly rather than through a website. Be wary of websites carrying ferry information but not owned by the ferry company, many have not been kept up to date.

I've only had experience with Brittany ferries and they charge for bikes.

Where are you thinking of going from/to?

Dover Calais charge as foot passengers. Brittany Ferries charge extra. When I go from Harwich I book it as "Dutch Flyer" which is a big saving.
In Northern Europe, the ferry charges depend usually on whether it is a natural (pay) or man-made (free) watercourse. Along the Danube there are differentcharges for footies and bikes, but at the moment it works out at about 2 Euros a crossing.

Beware of the cheap ferry broker websites that are incapable of booking bikes, or in some cases just more than one bike, as a vehicle. Go direct to the operator and if they don't have a bike option then its probably best to phone.

Brittany ferries on line booking works fine for bikes. P & O's won't let you book more than one so you have to phone them, it's been like that for years but they don't seem to be bothered about fixing it.

Newhaven - Dieppe bikes go free. And its a bike friendly service. Not to mention Newhaven is the nearest ferry port to London and the ride there is beautiful (apart from the last mile!). Dieppe has the Avenue Verte - a 40km cycleway towards Paris.
