After almost taking my finger off last night fettling I spent almost 5 hours in A&E. I was hurting soooo bad I did cry at first. People in the waiting room didn't seem to have any 'injuries' as far as I could see but I had to wait while the skeleton shift of Dr's whittled away at the waiting patients and finally got to me.

I'm feeling sooo 'happy' at the mo.....it must be the meds. One handed typing is wearing me out but I don't care. No work tomorrow but no riding for who knows how long........  I'm sad now

Come on Cyclox you can't say that you spent five hours in A&E without telling us what you actually did and just fettling the bike isn't enough we want the full gory details.

I've been fettling for the past 2 weeks and NO injuries. Which is unusual because I'm a clumsy bugger at the best of times, and normally NO patience at the best of times.

I reckon it's spinning the back wheel really fast with the bike upside-down, then sticking your finger inquisitively between the spokes. Like my friend Paul did when we were kids.

Well its not getting your finger trapped between the chain and the chainwheel on a fixie because the finger seems to still be attached.

Most places these days have a fast triage function to decide how urgently you need to be seen. Having a suspected heart attack puts you near the front of the queue, having hurt your finger near the back as you are unlikely to get worse or die from waiting a bit while they deal with the heart attack patient.

I once managed to clamp a finger in a front mech while fitting it. It didn't injure it, just held it, very firmly. Since I couldn't reach either my land line, or my mobile, and lifting the whole bike was tricky, I did wonder if I'd starve to death. Eventually (well, after about 30 seconds probably), I managed to pull the spring back just enough to get the finger out.

I'm betting on a cable/outer trimming operation gone bad.
