Finally Justice for victims of revenge porn site - 18 years Jail

Most people in a loving relationship would not even imagine their relationship is going to go tits up (excuse the pun) let alone that the person they most trusted in the whole world would stoop so low as to post their pic and details on the web. I hope those posting them also receive jail time.

I think this was more complex than that

This unpleasant individual was also running s site that could have been the one redeeming feature

If someone asked for an entry to be removed as it was without consent, then doing so would have been reasonable, but charging s fee for that removal constitutes extortion

What is exactly the other side of the argument? Are the victims to be blamed for trusting someone.

Thats like saying to someone - serves you right for buying the expensive bike. It was bound to be stolen.

I fail to understand the need to take naked pictures of your partner or the willingness to have them taken by your partner. It's not the same as saying 'serves you right for having your expensive bike stolen - you shouldn't have bought it.' No sensible person would leave their expensive bike unlocked and immobilised yet some women, it's nearly always female victims, willingly present unscrupulous men with the opportunity to steal their modesty, self respect and social standing.

There's a lot of education about the consequences of one's actions that needs to take place for both genders about their roles, responsibilities and possible consequences of their actions within their relationships. The internet has moved the boundaries of what damage is attainable by nasty people. Sadly society has a lot of catching up to do to curb the unsavoury activities of those who are willing and able to exploit it.

The genie has been let out of the bottle and it's going to be difficult to get it back in.

The extortion bit is clear. There are other revenge porn sites that have been out there longer but the operators are smarter than this guy. They handle takedowns by encrypted private mail also extortion but hard to handle. Hopefully this sets the tone for the rest of land enforcement to act. So far Google has acted on filtering put in their search.

Not all of us do it but some do. Its in the privacy of their rooms.

I do agree on education and awareness especially about the way the net is evolving but this is a case of spiteful partner that is seeking revenge and causing harm and damage to someone's life and the harm can be irreversible.

I know one case where the victims name was changed by deed poll and the family relocated her. I also suspect that the family paid the extortionist money. Its one of the early ones called Gutterpost or something.

Yea I realise that, he was just providing the service and then providing the rectifying service to make a profit. My post was more aimed at those quick to judge someone who trusted another person to keep a photo to themselves.
That's why I think those who posted their ex's photos should also be prosecuted, although I presume there are just too many now. They should still try though, it's completely unacceptable.

It's a horse poo of an argument.

People are allowed to be naive, they are allowed to be trusting, they are allowed to fall in love with the wrong people.

They are not at fault.

People who take advantage of this are no better than confidence tricksters on the elderly. Elderly people are taken advantage of all the time - it's not their fault either. Nor the stupid, nor the ignorant.

I believe people should be allowed to explore their lives without getting hurt. If they want to take nudie pictures, then fair play to them. Anyone exploiting that should be shot.

Most of the reports carried the comment about why the judge sentenced him to 18 years when the max is 20. Which is pretty stiff for a first timer. The judge was disgusted with his statement to the Police and actually cited it during sentencing.

About time too.Feel sorry for those who suffered in silence all these years.
This kind of thing has been going on for hundreds of years.

As usual, the medium has changed, but the crime has not.

It's about humiliation and blackmail and it worked when all a woman sent was a suggestive letter to a lover.

Wasn't that one of the aristocracy's arguments against mass transport. That it would encourage licentiousness?

Poppycock and balderdash.

I'm a tad surprised no-one's raised the matter of the sentence. Granted it was a crappy thing to do, but 18 years? He seems like a common or garden cretinous scumbag, but not a properly evil person. I don't know, I'm not in any way defending him or what he did, but 18 years seems a bit OTT to me.

21 counts of identity theft and six counts of extortion

Those were the cases that were prosecuted.

He earned tens of thousands in extortion

Over 10K images

I suspect the judge took into account the untold number of victims beyond those specifically involved in tge prosecution.

I also suspect this is the USA so this isn't a full 18 in maximum security.
