I did 5 nights from manchester to aberystwth. I bought a paper map and numbered all the sites on my route and drew a key with contact numbers, that way I wasnt tied to a particular mileage each day. All the C&CC sites were happy to accomodate me. Sites were found by "search this area" in google maps then cross referenced with a google search for their own page.

Sounds like a lot of work but it was actually a nice evening of planning spent with a glass of wine!

Archies app seems good so far. Would have been useful to have a link to the campsites' websites though.

On android it is an indirect link via google - ditto W10 - coming up France last autumn i found many campsite didnt have websites - considering it is compiled by a retired dutch schoolteacher it is still not bad

If your out in the sticks and have a bit of front, knocking on a farmhouse or a house and asking if there's a campsite locally may throw up suggestion, or as has happened to me, an invite to use an adjacent field. Facilities may not be available but you can cross that bridge if necessary

Best of luck

Thanks all for the many suggestions, think I'm sorted.

One thing I came across is that the accommodation finder in cycle.travel will indicate the locations and phone numbers of campsites. It is stated the information comes from Archies.

Yep - it pulls down the information from Archies (with his very kind permission!) every month.

Camping & Caravanning Club sites will always find room for a cycle camper - even if they're full. It's actually part of their rules.

I'd recommend joining the C&CC. It's relatively cheap and helps support a really good network of campsites and certificated sites.

I decided to look up the wording of their rules. The wording is a little weasel so then I suppose it boils down to implementation.

"2.5 - Backpackers wherever possible will be accommodated – please advise us at the time of booking. A backpacker is defined as a camper who arrives on site by foot, bicycle or canoe, but not in any form of motorised vehicle."
