It's questionable whether he should have pulled into the LH lane at a junction when vehicles are joining the motorway. Better to stay in the overtaking lane to allow them space. (edit: Ooops, someone has already said that.)

Once you get enough cars in the RH lane they inevitably have to slow down because of congestion.

Every time I've been on the M6, all the lanes have been "slow", tbh.

I don't drive on motorways a lot, but given the stupid shoot I see drivers up to every time I do (the M25 in particular seems to be a hotbed of texting idiots), I'm somewhat nonplussed that someone being in one lane for a long time seems like that big a deal.

IMO the psychology is the same for drivers as a pedestrian. If you were trying to walk down the street and some twat kept standing in your way, you'd get angry. Eventually you might say something polite like "Excuse me." Or "Excuse me pal, I'm gonna smash your face in."

Somehow we manage to get to work each day without Ped Rage, I suggest that's because we can Communicate With Words.

In cars we cannot.

My solution is a large LED screen front and aft with the letters C, U, N and T that can be illuminated at will.

That, or short range radio, so you can politely ask people to move out of the way as one does on the streets.

Or of course we could try a bit of lateral thinking and give up on the idea of overtaking lanes altogether - seems to work in the US, and they make better use of available road space 'cos you don't have an entire lane reserved for the 15% of people happy to be 'slow'.

I don't have any hard evidence, no, just a personal impression when I was out there that they seemed to have a far simpler and more efficient way of using their road capacity, with no apparent downside in terms of safety. I think of it frequently when I'm driving on the motorway, seeing traffic split maybe 25%/35%/40% between the lanes, with the kinds of frustrations that anchor this thread generating all sorts of ill-advised and potentially dangerous behaviour.
