Even if it wasn't dangerous it would smell so I don't think I'd want to do it.

Well I also would have thought it would smell, but this one doesn't, it's just warm air. It was already installed in the house so I've no idea if you'd be allowed to put one in today. As long as the joint between the flue and the flue liner was good, there shouldn't be any fumes.

Well if you're set on having an open fire why not go to an architectural salvage place and get a decent Victorian fireplace complete with a lovely cast-iron hoop and a mantle and hearth?
