I have thought about this, but I'm lucky that I have a nice road bike just now, older model giant tcr and quite heavy compared to the newer bikes methinks ... I've a tiagra group set on that so would just have liked to get a wee bit more for the new bike.

I only had a Tiagra rear mech, with Sora everywhere else. The upgrade to 105 was well worth it, and it seems generally accepted that if you're not going racing the benefits of Ultegra and Dura Ace are negligible.

You should be able to get a full silver 105 groupset around the £300 mark.

How does SRAM measure up against shimano? Is it a personal choice thing??
Different operation. Just I can't brake from Shimano hoods due to the shape, SRAM hoods work for me ergonomically. SRAM is lighter in the same cost bracket but I think the mechs only come in black. And Rival, the 105 equivalent will be more than £300

Are Apex any good? They have a set in white??

I prefer to Tiagra but for the reason above, not due to operation, aesthetic or weight. You'd need to try them out. IF you are perfectly happy with Shimano, I'd suggest you get 105

Looking at Merlin, they only have 105 cranks in 175mm which is quite long, you'll need to make sure you get the right ones

The cranks are still black http://www.fudgescyclestore.com/index.php?p=167635. (and £100-150 more than 105)

If you want matching aesthetic.. it looks like the silver 105 has grey/silver cranks

I would have preferred silver cranks on the Genesis but Apex don't do

Haaaa never even noticed the crank
