First Decent Bike

I finally got my first decent bike (imho) yesterday and rather than let Halfrauds set it up, I opted to do it myself. I have a friend who is a cycle mechanic, so I'll get him to check it over though .

For now, I look forward to getting some miles under my belt and to learning from and contributing to this great forum!

Yeah. I could have taken it boxed-up that day or come back at the weekend to take it assembled. Having read what I've read on this forum, I thought I'd possibly do a better job than them!

It's a nice thought that Halfords have had nothing more to do with my bike than selling it to me. I'll take it to my LBS when it comes to servicing!

Nice bike. But surely if you can assemble it then you can service it ?

What model is it exactly?

Btw using a large front chain ring to large rear sprocket is NOT an ideal gear combination for your chain as premature chain stretch and wear will occur. You are also going right across the middle chain line from largest inner rear sprocket to largest outer front chain ring which may cause excessive wear to the chainring and the sprocket. Best change down to the smaller inner front chain ring and down to a smaller rear sprocket for a similar gear. If you want to get max life out of your components then be wise to this.

Are you going to fit mudguards and a proper rack?

But still a nice bike. Have you got a decent D lock such as an Abus Granit X-Plus?

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely have to pay more attention to my gearing. I have a Kryptonite Mini D lock on order and should be with me shortly. Meanwhile, I'll be locking my bike in a colleague's car!

The bike is a "CBoardman Performance Team Hybrid".

I bought this same model about 2 months ago. Generally very pleased with it. It was the lightest thing I could find without actually going for full racing specs. Not sure about the double thumb triggers - cant see any advantage, especially as my thumbs tend to be above the bar when cruising ( I know it's not recommended, elf and safety and all that) I did return to Halfords for the first service (yesterday) and took it out last night only to find the gears slipping in a way they did't before the service!!
I'll take it to my local repair man next time.
Disc breaks are a new novelty for me and the jury is still out. They certainly stop you faster than anything else but I am wondering if long term maintenance might be a pain ?
