If you are thinking of getting into long distances then consider that a comfortable bike may be more appropriate than an out and out race bike.

A long distance bike will have a slightly taller head tube giving you a more relaxed ride position also slightly larger tyres help soften the ride . A harsh ride will add to your fatigue on longer distances.

Examples of bikes aimed at longer distance are Trek Domane . cannondale Synapse Specialised Secteur.

Specialised roubaix is very well regarded as a distance bike but is also more expensive.

won't be able to afford spec roubaix with it's over a grand price tag

That depends a lot on the frame quality and the size of the tyres. My Cannondale hybrid is the most comfortable bike by far on the centuries I've done, set up with 32 mm slick tyres. Okay not the fastest but since I'm never entering the tour of britain that doesn't really matter.

Just lower the tyre pressures by a few psi. The road surfaces round here are generally poor and I dislike getting battered when I ride, but my Cannondale is fine as long as I don't go overboard with the track pump. I used to put about 100 psi in the rear and 90 psi in the front but since switching to latex tubes, I can get similar comfort levels and better rolling resistance at 95 psi front, 105 rear. If I went to the 120+ psi pressures that some people use, then yes - the bike would be very uncomfortable.

I accomplished my first this year as well despite riding all my life (and going off to cycle around the world - well trying to cycle around it)... I routinely manage the metric tons and am in the monthly metric challenge - have even managed a 100km off-road with camping equipment... distance is not normally a problem for me (my commute 3 times a week is 22 miles each way)... there is just a huge jump from completing your first imperial century to trying for one every month starting in what is the darkest and often wettest/coldest months of the year.... and I still maintain that the imperial monthly century challengers are all mad as hatters....

I've only just seen the monthly challenge, definitely going to sign up next year!

what is better about a compact compared to a triple? lighter, easier to adjust FD?
