Anybody know when it was first done ? A friend of mine just paid quite a lot for an " original and unrestored 1950's " Walvale " road bike. In many respects it looks the part, faded decals, 531 frame and fork stickers suitably aged, long wheelbase, loads of fork rake, nice lugwork ............. metallic red paint ......??? Surely not ??

Metallic paint was definitely available before 1936.

it was known as a 'flamboyant' finish.

pics please

Sorry I think it'll be off to the bike jumble at Whalley this Saturday so I'll never see it again... Ta for the enlightenment chaps I'm amazed.

BTW I went to a weekly bike meet populated by very "senior " gentleman cyclists " today (for the first time )... one had just had his 101st birthday... he came in a car....
My conversation went something like my original post to one of the old chaps, his response was " Yeah, I think that frame would have been built by old whatsisname .... pause ... shouts across the hall, " oi Jack, woould this have been one of yours ".... surreal!!
The place was full of old boys who were at the top of their game in the 50's many of whom did a 30/40 mile round trips in the pissing rain to sit and drink tea and talk bikes and races. Wonderful stuff... "
