First ride on motorbike

At the risk of repeating what others have said, unless it was private land ,and you would needed to have permission from the land owner in order to avoid another can of worms you would have needed license, tax , mot and insurance as well as L plates and a valid helmet.
Plus car parks have streetlights close intervals so the speed limit will be 30 max .
Sounds like at least 4 motoring offences to me....

This afternoon I didnt have anything to do so decided to have a little go on my motorbike.
I walked it to a private car park (dont have insurance) so that I could legally ride it.

Hmmmm....... From memory, I think you were committing at least 2 Road Traffic Act offences just by walking the bike to the car park, assuming you had to walk it on a public road (which includes the footpath/pavement)..

You must have at least 3rd party insurance to take it onto a public road. The fact that you were walking it rather than actually riding it is irrelevant. The legislation is here. The word "use" is open to interpretation, but you will find that even cars/bikes parked in public places need to be insured.
VED.. You must have a valid excise licence to use or keep a vehicle on a road. Walking it or riding it, again it is much the same.

The bike is a 125. That type of engine size, you cannot insure unless you have taken a CBT. You can only ride a 50 without a CBT (with a provisional driving license of course). I still dont have the V5 from the previous owner yet (I am really getting annoyed with them) so I wouldnt be able to tell you if it is SORN or not.
You can only take a CBT on a 125 which is the instructor company's (because you are covered in their insurance). I cannot take the test on my own bike.

All of this is gravy really. Its unlikely that I will ride it again due to me selling it (when I get the paperwork) so until then, it stays away.

Return it via eBay (I don't know how that would work, but I know you can).

It was meant to be 'in the post'. Return the bike, get your money back and put it all into the car fund.

Might be worth getting the frame number checked out to see if it matches the plates . Sounds nicked to me and you dont want to be selling a vehicle without the right docs
Does the steering lock work ? they are puny things but people still use them and they are very easy to break in order to nick the bike

The bike didnt come up as nicked. I did a check online with the VIN and the numberplate and everything came out right. Only had 2 owners from new, first registered in Apr 11.

I often wondered when i pushed my off roader on the road if i was breaking the law and local police told me they would not charge me although technically I was breaking the law .

You might be able to get a replacement V5 as long as the sig / name & address on the receipt matches the one at the DVLA

Parents. They believe that motorcycling is incredibly dangerous, and that cycling isnt. My mum just wants me to get a car. She doesnt quite understand the expense of that though.

Motorcycling isn't dangerous Matthew, it's the idiots on the road who create the hazards by not thinking or looking. I share your parents concern but at the end of the day they just want you to be safe, you never stop being their baby, regardless how old you are.

Well done. Having viewed the video of yourself riding round a carpark with other cars and pedestrians in, I suspect you could have racked up enough points to disqualify yourself before you've even used your license.

Are you sure there were other cars and pedestrians ? I thought it was private ?

It came from Skem, off Ebay, and you still haven't got the V5. You sure the VIN is for that bike? Just doesn't smell good, chalk it down to experience.

Motorcycling is dangerous, but great fun!

Possibly no more dangerous than riding a bike on the roads. I have ridden motorbikes for the last 40 years, and i think that the skills that you learn from a cycle lends it's self well to riding a motorbike. Road awareness, positioning, watching what the other road users are doing. Of course, on a motorbike things can and do happen faster, but, with a bit of care can be great fun and well worth it.
