I've been commuting six years on hybrids, and I've never had a close left hook. It happened twice on my wayhome today though, on my first commute on my shiny new 105 synapse disc.

First at traffic lights up a reasonable hill, I had to slam on my brakes as a car simply cut me right off, and the second at a T, where a Taxi overtook last Moment and turned left across me.

This obviously isn't reliable data. I was probably cycling slightly differently. They were both up a slope, perhaps I was going faster. It was my short 3.5 mile commute so I was only wearing jeans and shirt, so didn't look different.

Is this just an odd coincidence, or is this a thing riding a road bike?

Coincidence. If anything I think i do better on a road bike as the speed differential between myself and other road users is lower.

Maybe they just wanted a closer view of your nice new bike?

I'm sure it's just a coincidence. Enjoy the bike!

Maybe it's down to the fact that you're traveling faster. On my machine, particularly on the downhills I can hit speeds only dreamed of on a regular machine and I've had a few instances of cars starting to overtake, failing and then tucking back in behind me. Just bad judgement from poor drivers imho.

A few years ago, when I went from hybrid to road bike my commuting average speed went up from 15 to 20 mph. The solution is to either ride slower (!?) or take a more primary position when approaching left hand turns. I'd rather risk slightly annoying someone by riding defensively than risk being left hooked.
