Well.... Ive had my first scratch, or should I say scratches...

I was just exiting a RAB, following another car when he sprayed his window washer... this got me straight in the face. I didnt see the pothole coming up and the front wheel came out from under me.

24mph - 0mph in 0.1seconds. Ouch

The Road bike took a beating on the left hood, lights scattered everywhere. The driver who squirted his screen wash, didn't stop.

The driver behind stopped and explained he saw me hit the pothole. Two pedestrians helped me and the bike out of the road and gathered up my lights/camera. No footage on the camera, I forgot to charge it last night....

Im ok. Hole in my elbow, road rash all over my arm, shoulder and hip. There seems to be a lump in my elbow (gravel I think), so I'm off down A&E to get it checked out.

No helmet, or injury to the head. But Im sure if I was wearing one, it would have saved my life....

Glad your not too badly hurt, maybe you should get some cycling glasses

Thank gawd you didn't wear a helmet. Can you imagine the cracks in it if you had and the rotational injuries you might have suffered.

Sorry to hear about the crash. Get on to the council about the pothole.
Motons can be ****ers with screen wash. Nasty stuff if you get it in your eyes. One of the reasons I wear cycling glasses.

Thanks for the best wishes guys. I'm fine. I'm going to ache in the morning though!

Cycling glasses are one of those things on my list. I just havnt found a cheap/functional pair yet. They all seem a rip-off.

I now have a nice road-rash tan line, where my t-shirt protected some of my arm from the road. The nurses were complementing me on my pain threshold whilst cleaning my elbow with iodine. It wasnt that paintful at all, until she got to the deep (1cm) hole in my elbow. OMG that hurt!

The bike, I think is ok. The brake levers/hoods are scratched and the left hood is bent inwards. Bar tape is all ripped on the left drop.

I dont believe the bars are bent. So all I will need to do is re-position the left hood. The rest of the bike is fine. just a few spots of blood on the frame

Do you think the bars are safe to continue using? Its aluminium so I imagine it will be fine.

I'd be minded to change the bars - it's a bit of a nuisance, but you don't want a failure at speed or in heavy traffic.

I suspect someone will be along soon to post a vid of a hapless cyclist's bars snapping

Indeed, Ive seen the video. It wasnt you was it?

The bars arent bent at all, but I suppose I wont be able to see any problems with the naked eye....

Off down the LBS then I suppose.

Keep your eye out (ouch) for the next Lidl/Aldi cycle sale. From £2.99 with 3/4 sets of interchangeable lenses. Yep they are a bit second rate but I don't know a cyclists who hasn't misplaced/smashed a pair. The more you pay the more your grieve ™

glad you are okay but that comment made me laugh

I use Bolle safety glasses since reading about some bloke who lost an eye after a bee hit him.

Bolle are a decent make and screwfix sell them for a tenner or so, they look allright as well and last a long time.

Good selection in my local aldi right now.

I think glasses give a bigger risk reduction than even the best case for helmets.

+1 for safety glasses, cheap and cheery. Not only stop flies hitting your eyes (particularly riding trails) but small stones that cars occasionally flick up.
