Round my way haddock replaced cod for a while but is now back to being an option. I'm off to Ward's in Penistone on the way home for divine cod & chips, but I think I'm looking out for swordfish at Tesco tomorrow.

Tonight's meal is a recipe of my own drunken devising featuring tagliatelle, flaked hot-smoked salmon, red onions, garlic, cherry tomatoes, ground coriander (my "go to" spice), sweet smoked paprika, mustard powder, fish sauce, maple syrup, grated cheddar and white wine. Sounds disgusting, and not something I would normally produce when sober, but it was so much appreciated on its first appearance that I was ordered to write down as much as I could remember and reproduce it - tonight is its third performance in as many weeks. I'm now thinking what improving tweaks I could make, but daren't change it too much.

They call them Stracciovoc but I have no idea what they’re called in English. Not much on them but what there is, is sweet and tender....

Monkfish tail is lovely - a bit pricey, but worth it. Wrap it in serrano ham, pop a few sage leaves in there too, dot with butter and roast in the oven.

I'm a big fan of brill. Stunning fish, really worth it. Wonderful roasted in the oven with tarragon and caper butter.

At the cheaper end of the scale, you can't go far wrong with plaice. Simply dredge in seasoned flour and pan fry. Other similar ones to try are dabs and megrim.

Also, river cobbler aka catfish. Rose to notoriety a few years ago after some chippies were selling it as cod. But it's truly lovely fish in its own right. best either pan-fried or done in a foil parcel with butter, salt & pepper.

Eels are also really tasty. Jellied eels aren't everyone's cup of tea (they're not mine, though I will eat them if I can get cheap on YS), but they're so good pan-fried or thrown on the bbq. They're also divine smoked. One of my all-time favourite indulgences.
