Finally got around to getting my fixed frame powder coated and this is the result (picked it up at the weekend):



Parts are on the way for the rebuild, starting with a new headset and tyres to get it standing on its own two wheels again. I've also bought an old Shimano 600 crankset that I plan to use with a single chainring, figuring this would be better quality than an equivalently priced, new and cheap single speed crankset.

It's my intention to go back to a two brake setup as well (to give me the option of running it single speed on longer / hillier rides) and I'll be upgrading the old Weinmanns to modern dual pivot brakes while I'm at it.

Proper mudguards will also be fitted, now I've gone to the hassle of brazing on mounts for them.

Very nice. Hope that's not a bottle of what I think it is holding it up!

The saddle is indeed an old (I bought it new in 2007 I think) B17 that I early on made the cardinal mistake of riding through a Scottish winter on a bike without mudguards. The leather became quite soft and the sides flared outwards too much for comfort. Drilling and tying didn't help much and chopping it was a last resort and if that hadn't worked, the saddle was probably destined for the bin. As it turned out, it did work and while still quite soft, it's been very comfortable for thousands of miles since. My other bike has a Spa Nidd (their answer to the B17) which feels like a completely different saddle - very hard and solid though after over 1000 miles of breaking in, still comfortable.

Where's the mudguard's !!

Well yes, I did go to a lot of effort to put mudguard eyes back onto that frame! While we still have a moderate chance of sunny weather right now, I'm enjoying running the bike without them but by September I expect to have a set of SKS Bluemels in place. Still undecided between black or silver though.

If you ever get another B17 a tip for helping them to keep their shape is to use a wide cable tie or a luggage strap to slip over the nose that holds the sides in place when drying. this helps stop the dreaded flare and accompanying hammock look.

Cheers, not a bad idea. I go to great lengths these days to avoid riding in the rain without mudguards, whether seated on a leather saddle or not so hopefully wouldn't have a repeat of the abuse I inflicted on this saddle. If I could justify the money, I would like a nice B17 Special with the large copper rivets one of these days so I'll keep your tip in mind!
