Is there a formula to calculate how much distance cycled on the flat equates to how many meters climbed. might end some arguments
There are a number of sites on the web that do calculations based on hill gradient, rider weight, position etc. and provide wattage or times and so on.

You may be able to use these to cobble together a formula, but crucially you must ensure that it proves conclusively that your mate is a lazy wimp. It's of no use otherwise.

It's why I never usually bother mentioning speed on my reports on My Cycling Log. I am not quick, but (say) a 20 kph average for 100 km is not as slow as it sounds once you take into account that the route might have featured 2,000 m of climbs, many at 10% and several at 20-25%!

Yay will get my flask of weak lemon tea and anorak meet you at the end of london bridge platform for a healthy bit of trainspotting.

Hmmm, I can see what you mean in the sense of trying to keep a continual output high but I think the average over the enture duration of a ride should still be similar, regardless of terrain - assuming level of effort is equal.

I don't ever bother entering the hill climb ones on strava, I'd have to do give up work and cycle round all day every day here to have any hope of meeting the climbs figure! Maybe i'll do it one month if we book a cycling holiday
