Try being a photographer, *Everyone* thinks they are an expert just because they have some cheap plastic all singing all dancing SLR and Photoshop on their computer, and absolutely no knowledge of how to use them properly.

I stopped doing photography years ago now, all the crap just wasn't worth it, and whats more, I haven't missed it one bit!

If you want to be a photographer, knock yourself out!

Indeed, I've just re-read the email that this unbelievable man has sent back to me; and in regard of the long list of things I said I've have to do, hence why the quote was what it was, he said, "Yes, that sounds about right". So now it's all his idea, he knew it all anyway, was just testing me to see if i knew too.

I have been known to suck through my teeth and tell them, "Oooo, it'll cost ya!" to completely change the L&F of a web page ... whereas in reality it's an hour of writing some new CSS ... et voila!

Hmmmm...

And you wonder why people don't trust you when you tell them it's going to be a difficult job?

I wonder if anyone else here who writes software can relate to this (I'm sure you can!),

Don't you just hate it when a potential client asks, "I want an application/website/etc to do so-and-so, how much will that cost?"

So you go away, think about it, raise your eyebrows when you realise how much work is involved, then you send a reply saying, "well, that will cost £X, because I have to do this, and this, and this, and etc ..."

And how do they reply? "That seems a lot! I don't understand why it has to cost so much, all that will be be on it is a few text boxes and few buttons and a graph!"

"Yes, I know, but that's just the interface, do you have any idea what needs to go behind the interface??!"

"But it's just a few text boxes and a few buttons and a graph!"

"Your car is more than just a steering wheel, a gear stick and three pedals, right?"

"Yes, but this isn't car, it's just a simple thing. I can give you £Y". (ludicrously low offer that would see me getting paid about £1.50 per hour for the duration of the project). "I can't offer you any more than that, or I'll go elsewhere for a quote".

"Good luck .... !"

I think all professions have this. When I worked for GX Networks and Shell, I had similar experiences. It was "oh, just stick this pic up and put a page about our customer services raffle and prize please. Need it up by noon so no hurry" at 10.45am Drove me bonkers.

I am a dog groomer now and my customers cannot understand why it takes 90 mins to bath, dry, clip, style, clip nails, clean eyes and ears and give a really good brush out. It only takes them 5 mins a month so why does it take a professionaly 90 mins when we do it. How much do we want!!!!
OH was a pro photographer, not any longer 'cos its easy innit, you just point and click'

There have been times when we have both wanted to say "oh just do it yourself then if its so easy".

Just provide the interface

Nothing daft about that! We used to do it that way when producing an Executice Information System. Because executives are simple folk it is very important that they don't have to think very hard about anything they do, hence the interface was a very important component and what happened underneath was not. It didn't really matter what the system told them, they would do what they wanted anyway.

We spent 18 months having a lot of fun developing pretty screens at one end and boring data extract programs at the other and the company spent a million or two paying our wages, etc. Then Bill Gates stopped maintaining DOS and the software supplier told us his package couldn't work under Windows. End of.
