Last month, I was made to remove multi-tool from carry on luggage. Thankfully, they allowed me to go back to the check in area and check it in with my bar bag. The airline desk woman was very kind and didn’t charge extra.
It would have been very hard reassembling bike upon landing without the hex keys. I couldn’t buy another multitool as airport is well outside city (Bilbao).

Quite right too. You could have hexed someone to death, or undone the bolts that hold the wings on.

No tools allowed. No stove fuel allowed (if you do your own cooking).
Shoes allowed. Have to take them off at security and put them through a scanner.
The bike box weight is quite generous 32kg easyJet and 30 Ryanair. I dumped all my camping gear in with the bike. Used one pannier as carry on bag.

That was their argument. The security chap at Manc Airport was a cyclist too. He sympathised but was unable to turn a blind eye.
I'm heading back out to Mallorca on Tuesday for 10 days so taking bike again. This time with Jet2. They charge a not inconsiderable £35 each way for extra flight baggage plus £22 each way transfer supplement. A total of £114 to take bike which is a lot I thought but for 10 days much cheaper than hiring.

TBH I've never paid the extra transfer supplement in advance and the bus drivers have always taken the bike without complaint. I reckon if it came to it you could slip them 10 euros to smooth things over if necessary.
Unfortunately not these days. I tried that last time (TUI) and the driver insisted I had official ticket which had to be purchased from office.
This was 30 Euros for return trip and was given ticket for each way which I had to give to driver for each leg. Last thing you want is to be picked up at 0600 for journey home and bike box refused because don't have correct ticket etc

Did you say anywhere up stream what the case dimensions are? I didn't see it. Inches if you can manage, but I suppose those other things - cms? - if not. thxs.
I didn't but it's 44" long, 12" wide and 36" high. These are the longest measurements as it's not square.
Regarding size, the only issue really is carrying in car. The biggest we have is a Skoda Octavia estate which normally you'd think was a pretty reasonable size but to get into car you have to fold rear seats down. So if it's just wife and I in car no issue but if our kids are coming on holiday with us then either they or bike box can't fit. The kids are adults but we do go away together once or twice a year so on that occasion I'll have to hire bike if flying.

Last time I’m pretty sure we were advised that CO2 canisters weren’t allowed. Luckily we sent ours to Como by car
Okay, thanks. About the same size as mine then: 43" x 36" x 11". Just like yours, mine has wheels which helps. I do have to deflate the tyres to get it all in. I have a VW Tiguan and the rear seats are always lowered when I drive to a parking lot to ride so I can carry my bike without taking the wheels off.
Can you strap the kids onto the top of the car?
I haven't been to Mallorca for quite a while - 20 years? - it's probably quite different these days.
I've been going 2-3 times a year last few years and it's brilliant although very busy especially in the north and at peak months Apr/May and Sept/Oct.
Last few times we stayed in the south around Peguera which is still a great area and can easily get to mountains but much quieter and also if you hire a bike it's cheaper there. Supply and demand in Pollensa/Alcudia and I've found bike rental tends to be noticably more expensive there.
As it happens next week we're staying in Alcudia again but at least I'm taking own bike and as we're going right at end of season it'll be much quieter.
