you are going to severely limit yourself as to places to ride it though, I'd definitely inform Ryan Air in advance and get it very very well wrapped up if it's just in a bag.

I am considering turning up to the airport anyway... and trying my luck with my bike bag....

If its £50 pre booked and £60 at the airport, I think it's worth trying to 'blag' it in..

Thoughts... ??
I can't help feeling that it's all going to end in tears, but good luck anyway!
Let us know how you get on, might be helpful to others.

Alun you have to be optimistic in life and roll the dice sometimes.

Sometimes you win. Sometimes you loose.

Just picked up the bike bag now. I'm going to try say its bike parts. But hey, we will see.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

If anyone has anything to add. That'd be great.

Had a lovely tour in France this summer, till I got to the airport ready to board my Ryanair flight with my bike. I was proper frettin after having sought advice from some of the fine folks on CC who regaled me with tales of woe. The bike was covered in 2*2m2 of plastic transparent sheeting (3 euros from the nearby hardware store) and no extra padding.
Would they take it in the hold? Yes.
Extra charges (above the sporting equipment fee I'd paid)? No.
Safely returned to me at Bristol, undamaged? Yup.

I doubt if Ryanair has much to do with the bike beyond accepting cash for the ticket and flying the plane. The luggage is managed by the airport baggage handlers, not Ryanair crew; the very same folks that load luggage for first class passengers on BA, Air France and Emirates etc.

I would certainly use them again, but then I read the small print before buying a ticket.

Hi Fatblokish...

So how much did you pay for 'sporting equipment'.... ??
50 euros, iirc. I only had a one-way flight with Ryanair, as I caught the ferry on the outbound route. For me it was cheaper, more convenient and certainly quicker than using the Bike Express coach or train alternatives. And I was too yitten to try cycling home.

I used Ryanair to bring back a bike from Barcelona in Oct, no way will you get away with it as "luggage". I used them because the flight was so cheap compared to Jet2 who only charge half the bike cost. However, I was retrieving a stolen bike, one already bagged up, I couldn't be bothered to unbag it.......

Bikes in Barcelona are dirt cheap, you can hire a decent town bike for 10 euros for 24 hours! A steel roadie (very fashionable there) 15 Euros. Even hour rates, no minimum charge, are now only 1.50 euros/ph. I used one to take in all of the City in one day, it's easy peasy cycling, can recommend a place if you'd like me to?

I'm flying with RyanAir on the 30th.
Taking me and my bike to Barcelona for 6 days.

I have flown with RyanAir before and am aware of how tricky they can be, but never with a bike. Only ever took my BMX years ago.

I have managed to get an Edinburgh Cycles bike bag on loan. I was originally planning on taking a card box like we used to, make as small as possible and pack the bike with tubing and foam.

I have paid for 15kg hold luggage, and was planning on getting my bike through as this. But my question is, with me now taking a proper bike bag, are they gonna try and make me pay for a bike when I get to the airport?

My bike weighs about 7kg - 8kg. It's light!

What's everyones thoughts here?

Dismantle it a bit and claim it's not a complete bike but a collection of parts. You should have no trouble the way that thing looks :/
